Powerplay Powerplay - left of political spectrum option

Hi,

I'd like to see what Powerplay is like, but the three major factions seem to be: An empire, a middle democracy and a corporate setup. I'd ideally life to join a 'socialist' or communist faction . Is my understanding of the major factions correct and there is no representation of the political left?

Thanks.

mahon reminds me of a lefty, he even kinda looks like one of the political traiters we have in power here in the netherlands.

not sure of mahon is a lefty tho

The current powers just have hippies, not really lefties.

If they'd call themselves Marxists (quite funny guy, some really decent economics ideas) and not Communists (grown up there, not as cute as it sounds) I might even be tempted to help their cause.

Anatl is the one you are after. There two key areas of growth are Communist and Cooperatives.

Mahon is certainly corporate, but the wider Alliance does not care what you are politically, as long as you stick up for everyone else in the Alliance, everyone else will stick up for you, even if it is a Democracy fighting for a Dictatorship and visa versa.

The Federation is just Space America and therefore ranges from Right to Far Right.

The Empire is a 3000 years out of date mess, that is also Right wing.

Yes. Elite is very dystopian. You basically have a slavery-based Empire and an Ayn Randian corporate hellhole. There are some anarchistic (Archon) and cultist (Pranav) options, but no real socialist one.

Huh? Who?

Oh and I forgot Antal is the only power that makes every single form of slavery illegal in every single one of its systems, exploited and control systems. Over 100 billion people protected from the threat of being enslaved.

Mahon might favor corporations, but he is very much a socialist in convictions, as seen from both his in-game quotes and his galnet appearances. (1)(2)

The fortification ethos only shows what they work best with, not what they promote. Hudson, as president of the Federation, makes sure that Corporations have the power much more than anyone else. But he just has that extra bit of love for Patronages. He works better when it comes to greasing some palms.

Not to mention that they current implementations of the ethos are beyond ridiculous anyway, since they are locked to the type, not the character.

Finance favors Corporates.
Combat favors Patronages and Feudal.
Social favors Communists, Co-ops and Confederacies.
Covert favors Feudal, Dictatorships, Communists and Co-ops.

REGARDLESS of who has those ethos.

Does Delaine look like someone who would do well negotiating with Confederacies or Commies?
A communist state would have a revolt before power gets transferred through blood heritage*. But here comes Aisling and says otherwise.

The only one whose ethos actually fits their lore would be Pranav Antal. Feudal, Dictatorships, Communists and Co-ops are the ones who would be susceptible to a cult of personality.

So pay more attention to what they've done than what mechanics they have been given. Because the mechanics were a bit lazy.

*Unless turned to a dictatorship North Korea style.

I can see banned slavery and imperial slavery even in Aisling's Exploited Systems.

There isn't much in the game reflective of Left ideology, sadly. The game is a reflection of neo-liberalism in that regard - it was conceived while Thatcherism held sway in the UK, and sadly not much has really changed politically in the intervening 30 years.

This.

Antal isn't communist; for the powerplay mechanics, his triggers are just higher when the control system exploits a sphere where more than 50% of the systems are communist, feudal or co-operative.

I hear ya, and feel similar. Communism Interstellar is an active BGS player group, their chosen minor faction is one of the biggest in the game. Maybe help them out and they could be the next power?
Thanks for the plug! (and we're working on it.) :)

And yes, Powerplay is a bit of a mess. Ideally, it would not require the imposition of "characters" to drive it; powers, local or regional, should arise from the background sim and sit somewhere between minor factions and the major factions. None of the characters have any saving graces, really -- the game really is dystopian -- but the inclusion of "characters," I feel, actually undermines powerplay (pun intended) and the current implementation is the antithesis of emergent gameplay (a term that gets thrown around the forums by many who don't seem to actually understand it.) It would have been better for FD to have shown a bit of faith in the playerbase and let Powerplay actually emerge from the activities of the players, rather than give us a bunch of scarecrows. I appreciate that this would initially have favoured the BGS-focused groups, but frankly speaking, if the BGS is one of the things about which FD are proud (and they should be, despite the naysayers,) then they should turn it loose. Hate communists? Now you have two ways to undermine them. Hate fascists? You have practically a whole bubble in which to resist! As it is now, the whole basis of Powerplay is basically who has the best gear, and whether or not you can bring yourself to admit that you fancy Aisling Duval.

Besides, Antal really needs to pay his dancers a fair wage:

So yeah, Halfoat, come talk to us :)

So spreading Communism and Cooperatives isn't Communist? I respectfully disagree.

And the triggers are lowered not higher.

The dancers are not in it for the money they are in it for Utopia and the tea and cake ;)

You forgot the feudalism. ;) Additionally, it's a mirror of the dystopian view of society inherent in the game - the only reason to spread those ideologies and political systems is to make it easier for a madman to exploit the people. In short, Antal's socialist enthusiasm is in bad faith. Don't believe the propaganda, comrade!

I speak from the limited experience of one whose commitment to Powerplay is simply to resist the expansions of the powers who would exploit our people if they could. From that perspective, I work to raise triggers ;)

The dancers are not in it for the money they are in it for Utopia!
Then why do they look so unhappy? :)

Nah I left out feudalism because my point was that Antal supports Communism and Cooperatives as its two primary thingies. So I was just pointing out that you were wrong. You work to raise triggers but your statement was back to front. 50% Communist majority lowers the triggers for Antal not raises them. That's alL.I just want the Opening Poster to get the correct facts and not ones that are back to front. It might just be they way you wrote stuff or I read it but it came across to me as almost exactly the opposite of the actuality of things.

So for instance, say a player group was Communist or a Cooperative, Antal would support that player group to expand and grow over all other faction types in the system. That's kinda of shows that Antal is about as commune and cooperative supporting as you can get in the game. Whereas, just for example, the Alliance/Mahon PP would do as much as the could to destroy that player groups influence and replace it with a corporation because Mahon benefits from Corporations and is weakened by the presence of Communist, Co-operative and Feudal governments.

For a better understanding of Antal see

A bit out of date but I'll add some more.

Although Antal is authoritarian, his actual goal is a good one, the betterment of mankind through technology and self discipline (which is reflected in his perks and bonuses, when they work). Utopia is like a very strict monastic organization that is open with what it does according to lore. Its peaceful, but don't break the rules.

I mean, what other power bans all socially destructive drugs and all forms of slavery?
