Powerplay Powerplay What am i missing about the merits\points ratings??

Hi i have been playing powerplay now for just short of a month. I have been trying too get the 50mil salary @ rating 5 which too be honest i thought i would get it next week. Anyhow on checking my stats\rating\merits, i cant seem too make sense on how it works, here is an example...
I had just over 7300 merits, when i have just checked i now have 3609. so at rating 4 it should have taken away 1500 merits so.. 7300-1500=5800. So were does the other 2000+ merits go?? (my friend on elite said its probably VAT lol, but even the TAX MAN aint that bad...

Now too be honest the 50mil is a nice week earner, but too be also honest i can earn that in trade and missions anyhow (i fly a python) but thought i would give the powerplay a go as a couple of friends of mine have also joined. So all in all if it turns out too be 50 mil a month well it aint worth the time from my point of view..

I have had a quick look on the forums but i cant seem too find anything like this.

So any quick SIMPLE EXPLANATION will be much appreciated

You lose roughly half of the merits of the last week, not as many as what the rating requires.

Thanks for that, but it still does not add up, i carried over i think 1300 from last week made approx 6000 this week so total 7300.. so 7300-1500=5800-650=5150... but i have only got 3609 that still another 1500 missing???...

Your starting merits for this cycle are: 1/2 the merits you made last cycle + 1/4 the merits you made two cycles ago + 1/8 the merits you made three cycles ago.
Your rank has no effect on the calculation.

Your 1300 from last weeek will have decayed to 650 this week and will go to 325 next week.
Your 6000 from this week will go to 3000 next week.
As a result, next week you will have 3325 - close enough to your present figure to allow for the fact that your figures were estimates

Thanks for the reply's people, i have looked a little deeper into it. I knew about the merit decay. The thing is i dont think i made that much in week 1. Anyhow i have decided too go my old route of just trading, missions and bounty hunting ect... After all there is a load of space out there and alot more too achieve...
