PP merits decay - nope, I don't get it.

I thought I did. I thought the carried over merits were all of the previous cycle, 50% of the one before and 25% of the one before that.

However, I finished the last cycle with 1390 merits, having earned over 700 since the previous reset. I've started this new cycle with 649.

So I've not even carried over last week's merits, let alone any of the previous couple.

Does anyone actually know the formula used?

Such a bad decision with this decay mechanic. And FD ignored the community when we said we don't like it. No powerplay for me then since I have other stuff to do besides play. If it would be slower at least, like once per month, I would have a chance to take advantage of the bonuses :(

afaik its 50% in 3 iterations:
you earn 5000 in 1 week each (for consistency):
5000 > gets halfed to 2500, then 1250, then 625
let me write that in a code table:
Code:
                     5000
              5000 > 2500
       5000 > 2500 > 1250
5000 > 2500 > 1250 > 0625
week1 week2 week3 week4
5000 > 7500 > 8750 > 9375
...so making 5000 each week doesnt cut it. assuming you make 6000 each week, it will evolve like this:
6000 > (6000+3000 = 9000) > (6000 + 3000 + 1500 = 10500) > (6000 + 3000 + 1500 + 750 = 11250)

i would agree on taking 50% each week, despite 3 generations, is too much
a value of like the smaller portion of the golden ratio would be "natural", i.e. 1-phi = about 29%, making it look like an inverse fibonacci sequence:
Code:
10946 6765 4181 2584 1597 987 610 377 233 144 89 55 34 21 13 8 5 3 2 1 1
subtracting 4181 from 10946, leaves you with 6765. subtract 2584, and you get 4181.
looking at the values above, the difference between 10000 and 5000 is *more* than 1 generation, making it less a grind, since there are 2 weeks for accumulating a reserve.
i didnt think about the decay/survival/generations of merits for that formula (if its required at all), thats FDevs job ^^

Ah, right. So to maintain rank 4, for example, you need to earn 800 merits per week.

800 + carry over of ( 400 + 200 + 100 ) = 1500

Thanks, Babul.

From the FDEV beta PP manual;

"Merits earned from previous cycles still count towards your rating at diminishing rates.

Your merit total from the previous cycle is halved then added to your current cycle value. After two cycles, its value is halved again before being added. After three cycles, the value is halved once more. After four cycles the value is no longer added."

IF they NEED to have decay why not let it scale with RANK.

Rank1: 00%
Rank2: 20%
Rank3: 30%
Rank4: 40%
Rank5: 50%

So when you are at Rank 5 ALL collected merits from previous weeks decay at 50% - After all, you are a high roller and get paid 200 MILLION per month so you SHOULD have more demand on you.

But if your rank 5 then surly that means you have put more effort into your power, helped them build their power base etc. Why should someone that has put in more time and effort be penalized to a greater degree than some johny come lately that's just in it for the weapon. Makes it look like they just don't care if your a major player in their faction or not

True, but the rank 5 also gets a X10 times the reward of the rank beneath them in a monetary reward. The problem is that the 50% penalty is too steep but also the 50 million a week is too high a reward compared to lower ranks.

The rewards just dont scale well.

Nope, I don't get it either.

I calculated i should carry over 3175 to this cycle...instead, i only got 2062! (that's from weekly merits earned of: 1861, 1105, 2169, 1755).

The merit decay was bad enough without them making it even worse! If that's the case I may be done with powerplay :S

edit

But get the 2026 if assume the %50% of last, 50% before, 25% before that and 0 for 4th week.

This is just pants!

Now that you mention it, I thought I went down pretty quickly too this cycle. Last cycle (yesterday), I ended up with 1624 merits. Last week, I ended up with 2200 merits. So, forgetting the weeks before last week, my 2200 merits from last week should have carried over 550 merits ((2200 / 2) /2). My merits from last week should have carried over 812 merits (1624 /2). I should have started this cycle with at least 1362 merits. Yet, I'm starting the new cycle with only 693 merits. It seems that something is wrong or the formula is more complicated than what was explained. Or I'm missing something.

I am awaiting a response from support, they already told me this...

Power play merits stay valid for 4 weeks, the following example shows the merit values over a 2 week period. Example values have been added to This week then Next week shows what happens to these values.

This week:

This week merits = 5000
Week 2 merits = 3000
Week 3 merits = 4000
Week 4 merits = 5000

Current total merits: 17,000

At the end of the week the value is halved and shifted to the next week until it reaches week 5 where they removed.

Next week

It will be:

This week merits = 0
Week 2 merits = 2500
Week 3 merits = 1500
Week 4 merits = 2000

The previous week 4's 5000 merits have been completely removed.

Current total merits: 6,000

I hope this helps to explain some things, if this is still an issue please feel free to reply to this ticket and we will be only too happy to help.

It still confuses me, how can it be this week and next week if its talking in terms of earning merits in weeks 1 through 4.

This makes much more sense...

Using the example from support and forgetting previous weeks.

This week:

This week merits = 1624
Week 2 merits = 1100 (was 2200)

Current total merits: 3,824

Next week:

This week merits = 0
Week 2 merits = 812
Week 3 merits = 550

Current total merits: 1362

Actual total merits: 693

I don't get it. I think I'm going to file a ticket.

They should just go with the CG method - top 5% of contributors are Rank 5, top 15% Rank 4, top 50% Rank 3, any other contributions are Rank 2, and new pledges are Rank 1. There wouldn't be any need for decay at that point.

Thanks CMDr...
so tell me how does this work...
Before cycle I had and earnt 1544 merits
I jumped to rating 4 (which gives me the shields)
But now I have 744 merits.
So not rating 4 next week until I earn another 800 merits.
Sounds right according to the merit system.
My question is this...where do I go to get my shields which is the bonus for rating 4 for my faction?

Thanks

Support is using a bad example.

That first table of 4 weeks shows what, presumably, you earned in those weeks. Like if week 3 says 4000, that means you earned 4000 merits that week, and it's not 4000 merits carried over including the decay rate (because that would mean you made 16000 merits 3 weeks ago).

With that established, take a look at their second table. All they did was shift everything over one week and split it in half. Now, granted, that IS how it's supposed to work, but those numbers aren't realistic. All it's supposed to be is merits carried over = 1/2 earned last week + 1/4 earned 2 weeks ago + 1/8 earned 3 weeks ago.

It's simple and straightforward, and yet still somehow there was a "bug" people overlooked for weeks. How can you get such a simple formula wrong? From a programming perspective this is not difficult to implement at all. Additionally expected people to pull in 5,334 merits every week just to stay at rank 5 is unreasonable, but that's another topic.
