Practice Practice Practice

Been a while since flying any kind of sim.

Last one was probably Lock On a few years ago and did not play much as grew up :(

Been practicing in the Single player missions flying round asteroids as found I was pretty rusty and was going to get my ass handed to me pretty quick in the multiplayer!

Got a little better I think and look forward to the full Premium Beta when I can put myself up against some of you guys

Couple of vide from Fraps - only 30 seconds long as not got full version.
Excuse the music in the 3rd Vid as did not realise it recorded sound out game (It was an ad btw....not my chosen turning and burning music ;))

Loving this game so far...brings back so many memories :)

Thanks for looking - Tommy

Some nice flying,

and I believe you about the music :)

I'm probably alone on this but I actually thought it worked quite well with the video, Not sure why.

I have to admit, there's a chunk of me that wants to avoid multiplayer like the plague. I only JUST got finished the recon wing mission in the Alpha 1.1, after at least a dozen goes. And when I DID finish it, it was with no shields, life support gone, and about 20 seconds of oxygen left. Meanwhile, fellas like Zieman have these vids where they just cruise on in, and blow the entire squadron away without seemingly taking a single hit, and without an enemy ever leaving their crosshairs.

I'd get carved up like a particularly tender Sunday roast!

And even with the videos and whatnot people are making, the lack of any form of directions has me completely lost for the most part, and trying my damndest to learn as I go.

Practice does help.

I say that, I am still rubbish, but being rubbish for a long time helps you appreciate that after a while you are not as rubbish as you were to begin with.

It's worth sticking with the first kill thing for a while. Try to follow it, try to strafe around it (don't deploy your hardpoints, the NPC should leave you alone) try to see how its thrusters indicate where it will move next.

Have a look at some videos. I like Commander Sam, but there are others. Practice the stuff they show, like the FA off turn and the rotate around the navigation buoy thing. I struggle with the latter still, I seem to be on an outward spiral the whole time.

Also, there is nothing to lose. Take risks. Die a lot. Work out why and how.

Enjoy!

With the original elite, you could play for hours and days without dying, single handedly destroying multiple enemey ships routinely.

I would sit outside spacestations blowing up 100s of police before getting bored and flying off into the sunset.

Because of the nature of online none of this will be plausible anymore.

I'm not saying thats bad or good, just different.

You arent really going to be an almost invincible 1 man army anymore, you are going to die alot more.

More like a FPS, where you might kill 2 or 3 before you get killed yourself, alive for a few minutes and then respawning.

Being 4 to 1 outnumbered on the old elite was not a problem, because your ship was better, and you were better, 4 to 1 out numbered on a MP game, cos its more a level playing field its a huge disadvantage and death is almost a certainty.

But what you will find is that the majority of human players are probably worse than you. And worse than the enemys you find in the alpha.

Ah yeah, it's all about practice. A lot of the people who seem to be pro pilots on here have obviously not only played some other space sims, but also have had the benefit of playing the Alpha for several months now, as opposed to the 2-3 short sessions I've had so far. The initial Alpha does give you the ability to toodle around and get some practice in, but be nice to have maybe a later version, where we can at least have a consistent ship and weapons setup. Documentation would be lovely too - since I still have no idea how to turn flight assist on or off!

That is a thing of beauty right there. Just picturing the pilot, big cheesy grin on face, bopping away in the cockpit.

In space, no one can hear you singing along to your radio.

Just glad it did not record my mic otherwise there may have been some real bad singing going on there :D

I was thinking 'wow this person has really good music taste, but I don't know why they've got the radio on in the background as well. Then I realised that I hadn't turned my music off!

You should probably start with checking your control setup in game (OPTIONS/CONTROLS) to see what button does what, and what control binds are available. For example FA OFF, and whether you need to hold it or is it set up as a switch. Then familiarize yourself with the controls you need, and there you go - soon you'll find the AI easy to tackle with.

Tips: lateral/vertical thrusters help, keeping your speed at manoeuverability sweet spot at right times is vital, occasional reverse thrust helps.

P.S
Thanks for the compliments earlier, hope the video examples help. TBH, I consider myself cannon fodder in PvP, so don't worry, you'll be much better pilot than me in no time! :)

Hey folks am finding myself in the same situation as I've never played a space sim before. However been trying mouse and keyboard and also 360 controller, which I find harder for some reason. Normally playing with it in games is fine, but flying not so.

I'd love to know, of those who use Kb&M or 360 controller how you set up your preferences, and indeed what preferences one should have in place, the list is quiet bewildering. And sadly at the moment I've had very little time to play since being able to upgrade to Alpha.

Cannot really help you there...I use the X52 stick which I find very nice. I did try with K&M for a bit to see how it was compared and ditched it fairly soon after as found it hard compared to the stick. Having all the buttons to hand and the ability to input power granularly with stick and throttle is a huge advantage.

Saying that I have seen my lad use K&M and he goes like a nutter, not even looking at the keyboard and banging keys left right and centre. Think I am jut getting old

Haha quite understand I am currently looking at getting a flight stick, however I worry that it just won't suit me. I don't know how well the sticks I've been looking at will give me the ability to get on with the game. As I am finding the Xbox controller, difficult.

I've got three in mind, (none to expensive given upgrade to alpha and new computer have set me back a huge amount already) So I am looking at:

Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X or Speedlink Black Widow Flightstick.

Both are in an acceptable price range for me, but not sure if they are any good or if they will do for me what keyboard and mouse aren't.

Anyone out there who can give me a clue, would be most helpful.

Beginners Only Training-Practice Area

Maybe an area especially for beginners to practice and train to a certain level before venturing out into space amongst the more experienced players?

I haven't tried Mouse/Keyboard combo as I already had the Thrustmaster HOTAS X for two other flying games.

I find the throttle control on the HOTAS as well as availability of the buttons to significantly help me in controlling my ship. I believe there's a lot more fine tuning you can do with the joystick than you can with other inputs.

Just my opinion.
