You can download the Elite Dangerous Combat Demo installer from github. This is Windows-only, and it requires some fidgeting to get it working.

I don't own a Windows PC, so I installed this on a computer at work. We use NUCs with integrated graphics, so I had to dial down the resolution and quality a bit to play it, but it's still very fun! What you get is a bunch of different combat tutorials of progressing complexity. If you do run this on less capable hardware, try some of the later missions. The early missions are in a planet's rings, and all those floating rocks can bog down slower systems.
One thing I've learned is that I will likely need gimbaled weapons for awhile. I was all cocky thinking I'd go with fixed weapons for the extra DPS, until I played this demo. Keeping your nose on a moving target is not as easy as the pros make it look!
