Praise for our Youtubers/streamers (Influencers) but a warning to US the playing public.

You might find the beginning a little harsh, but he makes a point at the end.

.. Youtubers go for that righteous indignation (anti-grind) dollar ;)

I like the "celebrity" streamers, they are entertaining but I view them as exactly that: entertainment. These nice folks might be spending hours every week outside of whatever job they have creating and editing videos and adding soundtracks, etc. and after spending some of their spare time to actually play the game, maybe they exist on one or two hours of sleep per night but it is entirely possible some of them could simply be shills for the developer, sometimes providing a bit of soft, fluffy criticism to remain relevant and believable and at other times basically selling the game. While I do enjoy watching the content the YouTubers create, I take it all with more than a single grain of salt. o7

I work within the realms of advertising and we have what we like to call Influencers.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Influencer_marketing

We use high-profile celebrities within the community of the demographic we wish to reach to generate interest (and hopefully sales).

Now, I had posted a topic of negative narative generating a feedback loop of negative perception on things we might actually be okay with, and then adding to the chorus of negativity.

A commander had pointed out in the discussion C & P and OA's video, that people will watch and parrot fashion regurgitate (without thought) what was said and I'm in agreence in the human element of suggestion.
Just watch the first couple of minutes about the size of the circles and how easily corruptible our perceptions and opinions are.

So Commander Woakes are you trying to suggest, Youtubers need to edit themselves, and not have opinions because they can sway public opinion?
NO!
Rather the oposite. They can continue to be the personalities we have grown to love.
It is we the viewers need to remain critical. And that's even if the influencer is say someone who makes a useful tool or web app. It's not just content creation with regards to videos.

I love Obsidian and for me he's a valuable part of my Elite Dangerous experience (if not one of the major cornerstones) as I have my little "sandbox" and playstyle, and he helps keep me informed on things in Colonia, Inara, and lots of things I don't have the time or skill to pull off. AND give tips to other peoples channels.

And he keeps it reasonably impartial (and excited about the future of elite) when it's so easy to go down the Route of Angry Gaming Nerd or Zero punctuation and just throw criticism.

But this is the thing he's not without bias, and I don't agree with him on everything and so it should be ;) Even if two people share a lots of comon ground, there will always be some areas of disagreement. Come on, grumpy old Farts here!

Just watching a video of his about landing on a 9.7g planet directly after horizons ships, he points out that material collection in his SRV is not his favourite thing.

Personally, I LOVE material collection in the SRV when it's unfocused, however just waiting on the that elusive rare to appear AND THEN dropping that rare into the casino wheel afterwards for what more than likely is a negative roll tainted the whole experience.

And I know many people over the years complained about SRV material collection, but it's so awesome, easy and now thanks to the material traders super rewarding.

I wanted SO much to make a video about the joy of material collection on planets, using the scanner, and flying with the SRV but then got bored of the footage collection, editing etc
and then I Remember my Son's favourite Dan from the Diamondminecart showing his packed schedule for video creation and the experience terrified me into not trying ever again :D

So again, I got a lot of respect for these hard working individuals, creating quality content (I've only just started to use Inara) that we consume free of charge, but that doesn't mean to say we can't remain uncritical to idea's based on that individual's knowledge and private bias's.

This might be the oddest post I’ve ever seen on this forum.

I'm not sure I understand the point of this thread. If the only defense Elite Dangerous has left is "don't listen to YouTubers because their opinions are louder than necessary," I don't think it has much of a future.

Let me get this,i must be a dum dum!

So is this thread,in all seriousness,OP is suggesting that people cant make up their own minds after watching a youtube video?

Firstly i think its arrogant of the OP to think he somehow sees through all this and is above it. Even more arrogant to think that he has to explain it to the dum dums.

This thread will attract the usual high horsers who will then all pat each other on the back about how clever they are and people who dont agree with them will be called sheep with no mind of their own.

Really OP,i think the majority of people dont need your splaining.

Anyway, you seem to bear a grudge over SRV mat collecting video,it was ages ago,let it go:p

Also putting the cart before the horse, people dont only think theres a problem with C&P since OA's video,OA released a video because people thought there was problems with C&P.

Theres an important difference.

I like the phrase' playing public', and abhor the word 'community', which is so abused, here and in the real world:D

Seems cyclic to me, as we seem people cite the video as evidence, and the video cites the discussion.

There was posts in another thread where people were told off for not liking or agreeing with OA because he is OA.

Makes discussion pointless if we can only agree with a video that cites we all agree as the evidence that they are correct.

Not that it is limited to this YouTuber or Game or such

The thing I find the worst about You-tube Gamers, is when there is a change coming in a game, and they rail on the Devs for making the wrong choice, even if the wrong choice is only wrong choice is only wrong as they don't like it, then you get follow up videos railing on them again as they were not listened to, or crowing if the change is made it was made because of them, because they can only be right.

So many channels cease following.

But then You Tube gaming is an odd subject, see people give early access to games, the criticism them heavily when it is clear they having followed the development, as they don't understand the mechanics, and aren't even reading the instructions presented in game, and go on about how things aren't clear, when they don't put in any effort, to even read the tool tip they have open.

I don't like OA. Watch now as someone gets triggered by this.

Never watched his vids but I do chuckle at the hero worship he gets around these parts.

The latest thread bearing his name being a case in point. It's like people can only discern a problem once he's made a vid about it.

Conversely you will get people disagreeing with any point he makes as its him making it.

It goes both ways.

I think the majority of people are discerning enough to realise whats critical analysis, agree or not,and doctrine type stuff.
