You know what I always missed in the original elite, frontier elite II. The galaxy never changed. I did good and bad things in them games, but never saw a reflection of it. Frontier first encounters did actually attempt to change all this in their goal of making the galaxy seem more alive. You could take missions and see outcomes in the news. If you never took part, you seen a different version of the event. You could change the history of events if you took part. With the coming of elite: dangerous, we're going to see the same ideals as FD try to emulate a living, breathing and ever changing galaxy. So, we get to the crux of the problem of a broken promise. No offline mode, what will that actually mean. FD are protecting theirs and our investment. I certainly don't want to see the game ripped off and damaged by piracy hurting the potential of the game through sales of expansions etc. It will also perhaps be very limiting for those into modding games for fun.
What does actually mean though, and I do think this has been blown all out of proportion. We'll need to connect to the server once in awhile so it can verify your game and update the galaxy with content and changes, which I for one hoped for in elite, and frontier elite II. I don't want a discussion about broken promises, rants and rages about no offline. I'm just actually throwing out there what I personally wished to see in the games from elite onwards. This is what I feel FD have been trying to create all along with what we originally saw in first encounters, and what will come with elite: dangerous.
As I've said once before, I am in it for the long haul come what may, and I do want to be in a galaxy that can change with events or missions. Be it online/offline. Sure, it bugs me that I might not be able to just click play and enjoy the game, if say my internet was down. Perhaps FD will find a way to get around this, perhaps this is what is meant by "Connect once in awhile," I'll have to wait and see about that part. Maybe Michael or others from FD can shed some light on this part.
Shok.
