Pre-version of shader mod for vr

Hello people,

long time since I've posted here. Through the dcs forums I been made aware of a working reshade version that works for DCS, dirt rally 2.0 and assetto corsa as far as I have tested. And of course it also works with elite dangerous. I still remember the early tweaking days with elite dangerous on this vr-forum. This one I believe will bring back good memories for alot of you. If this has already been posted, I'm sorry for the spam. Just learned about it today.

The files for this can be found here: https://github.com/fholger/reshade/releases/tag/openvr_alpha2
Put the files and folders into your elite dangerous root install folder. Boot up elite dangerous and enjoy.

Home key brings up the reshade menu. I've changed the sharpening to 1.500, but default is 1.000. End key turns effects on and off so you can compare.

My experience with this shader is that I don't notice that much close up, but mid to far distances it helps very much. Especially for terrain so go to your nearest planet after setting this up. Plenty of details will be revealed to your eyes. I'm using a pimax 8kx and the difference between vanilla and this is quite large. The sharpening is very good and from my experience it will let us lower the amount of supersampling needed while still improving the image. I don't know how many steps of HMD quality settings, but quite a few. It also improves colors for me, but I have no other tweaks on my ED install.

You know that adding post processing adds latency don't you?

The last time I installed reshade it was a bit of a pain in the to remove. I would welcome the ability to alter contrast and brightness. Do you have any screenshots showing what your sharpening filter does?

To be clear, its not my filter just so nobody thinks I'm trying to steal the creators thunder here. The six files you need for this very easy to remove and the names of the files are easily recognizable. I've copied and removed them from the games that I haven't been able to get to work very easily. I've read that others have used mod-managers to do this process as well. I understand your concern though, I've messed up other games with mods as well. As far as latency is concerned I havent noticed any. Its difficult to capture the difference with pictures, but in this thread from the dcs forums there are two on the first page. https://forums.eagle.ru/topic/266701-new-universal-vr-shader/ You can read about other users experience there with the mod in DCS.

Yeah just tested it. Goes in to the Elite Dangerous/Product/Elite-Dangerous-64 rather than the one which opens when you browse game files from Steam.

Not bad, gets rid of that milky space effect and adds contrast. Not sure if I notice the sharpening much on my Reverb. It does go a bit towards making the LCD headset a little more like my old OLED.

nice one.

Ah good that you posted the folder name. It will be helpfull for other who want to try it out. I don't have a reverb so it might be that there a differences between the headsets. I'd say that the sharpening is somewhat nuanced, but still makes a big difference to me (I know that doesn't make sense). I didn't notice it in dcs because I was staring at my cockpit at first. When I started to look at further details the difference was more apparent. In elite dangerous I usually tune when docked in the hangar and look at the far away station name and symbols. Docked and flying near the surface or driving is where the difference is most apparent to me. I've been using the pimax 8kx for quite some time and did fine without this mod. After using it I find the clarity at range is easier on my eyes. Millage will vary.

Question: Nvidia drivers have a sharpening filter built in. Is the Reshade sharpening filter basically the same as just turning on sharpening in the driver?

no. it allows you to set the sharpening amount rather than it being either on or off.

It's pretty basic from a regular ReShade/ENB as you only get the following to adjust in the settings file:
PreprocessorDefinitions=
Techniques=VRSharpenColor@VR_CAS_Color.fx
TechniqueSorting=VRSharpenColor@VR_CAS_Color.fx

[VR_CAS_Color.fx]
Brightness=0.999000
CASContrast=0.700000
Contrast=1.002000
MaxDelta=0.100000
Saturation=1.300000
Sharpening=1.900000
It's the ability to adjust brightness/contrast/saturation more so than the sharpening. You can make the colours really pop.
