Predictions/ideas for 2023

With another year of amazing new additions almost over, I am wondering what are your predictions for the next year? I don't mean only with regards to new animals and DLCs, but also to what other features may be added. What direction do you expect the game to go into?

For me it feels like 2022 came with a change of approach:
  • DLCs no longer focussed on regions, but other themes. Animal packs seem to be about biomes now while mixed DLCs can be about anything.
  • DLCs seem to no longer focus on the most popular animals in logical categories, but mainly at introducing new features (branchiation, walkthrough exhibits, etc.). This means we get less coherent themes, but more surprise additions.
  • DLCs seem to do well even when the most desired animals are already in the game. The Twilight pack had the least diverse roster (and for many the least exciting too), but was still well-received. This means that in the future we may also get DLCs without clear 'headliners' but that do introduce refreshing features.
  • Exhibits have gotten more attention in the second half of the year with the introduction of WE, which are much more versatile than our traditional exhibits.
  • New guest features have been introduced in pretty much every free update with guided tours, exhibit demonstrations, butterfly interactions and roaming educators.
Based on what we got in this year, I feel like they may continue to work on the following:
  • Following the expanded guest-animal interactions, I think we may see options for guests to feed certain animals.
  • Now that we got WE, I would expect more options for traditional exhibits too. At least make them boxless, perhaps introduce smaller sizes or new non-square shapes.
  • We may get more WE species. With bats and butterflies out, climbing nocturnal animals and birds feel like logical steps. Ocean tunnels seem far away but may even be a possibility too.
  • With Wetlands and Grasslands now out of the way, I expect the next animal DLCs to focus on rainforests, mountains or perhaps islands.
  • With mixed DLCs becoming more feature-oriented, I think there's a chance we will get a Reptile House or Petting Zoo DLC.
    • A reptile house DLC could be a good way to introduce new exhibit features and add some of the remaining gaps with exhibit species. Since we got five butterflies at once, they may be able to add multiple exhibit species in one DLC, especially if the habitat species don't require much new behaviour. It may also come with more modern non-themed scenery such as tile walls.
    • A petting zoo DLC could be a good way to introduce new guest-animal interactions such as animal feeding. It may also come with interesting farm-based scenery and new guest facilities in the free update (playgrounds??).
    • Also here islands is a good option if they want to introduce more Polynesian/Caribbean/Maori/Indonesian themed items (which I'm certainly not against). Nocturnal seems less likely now that we have Twilight, but it's certainly still an option and could even come with the new exhibit features. Coastal may be a final theme which could introduce some interesting species as well as good themed items.
  • I'm not expecting a DLC for flying birds or fully aquatic species anymore, but I definitely see a chance that some species of either group may be implemented somehow, similar to how we got the siamang as our first and so far only branchiating species.

I would love like a new exhibit building with a bunch of built in tanks where you could place different animals. That way there would be a lot of different size tanks etc.

1. Tropical/Rainforest Animal Pack: This is really just a filler pack that I think is desperately needed and what I want the most Sloths, fossas, red river hogs, a SA monkey etc.

2. Petting Zoo Pack:
This may be boring to most, but I really want domestic goats! They are at almost every zoo I've been to. Maybe donkeys/ponies, waterfowl, and a domestic pig breed too. Guest feed dispensers for guests would be so cool! I think it would be a great summer/fall scenery pack, depending on whether they switch the cycle back.

3. Aviary Pack/Flying Birds Implemented:
I don't think I need to explain any further.

4. Highlands/Mountains (Animal) Pack: Might be a bit weak, but Hamadrayas baboons, spectacled bears and takins would be some cool additions.

I think the safest bet is an island pack, which is more likely to be a scenery pack than an animal pack. It's the most sensible vehicle to add the Tasmanian devil to (since it missed Australia, Conservation, and Twilight) and also potentially knocks out the kiwi, tree kangaroo, and fossa, and also an easy theme to design scenery around.

Frontier is still really stingy with adding birds (not just aviary birds but habitat ground/wading birds; again, we have more canines than total birds in the game even with the emu), but we know they plan their DLCs about a year in advance, so it's possible the crowing for birds (pun intended) might mean we get something next year instead of this year. I do think the walkthrough exhibits point to smaller birds that are often in walkthrough habitats like budgies or lorikeets, but not necessarily to eagles or owls or even macaws, which might require a more proper aviary system (it would be harder to get away with looped animations for bigger animals that aren't kept in groups of dozens).

I want more reptiles. They are my priority. If we don't venture at least 3 next year imma be sueing frontier.

Preferably a perentie, Lace monitor and Radiated Tortoise. Mabey even turtles if we're Lucky. I feel like the could unlike other aquatic animals because you can just give them a little bit of sand to start on where they'll also lay their eggs. And you did say frontier likes new features so...

Tnh a reptile house pack sounds like a real good options for a scenery pack.
Parsons Chameleon, Lace Monitor, Yellow Footed, Radiated or Leopard tortoise and african dwarf crocodile + some kind of cool snake for exhibit sounds like a really great selection that could easily come with a bunch of new branches, faux rocks and similar pieces typical for terrariums.
Ironically i could totally see such a pack being africa loaded due to it being the last place we dont have a coc yet, but also a chameleon and a tortoise being a must with the arguably 3 most popular tortoises (spurred, radiated and leopard) all being from africa/madagascar.

My highest priority habitat reptile is the argentine black and white tegu, they are beatutiful, quite common in captivity and are something different than the usual croc, tortoise and monitors for once

Here’s my 2023 hopes.
Considering how 2022 mixed up the dlc rotation and added new stuff, none of the ideas bellow will match a specific dlc time release. While I want frontier to continue WE I also want them to put basic exhibits alongside to make the formula 4+1+set of 5 or 7+1+set of 5 or just fuse the formulas together. Or we can finally get an aviary dlc and include all the birds we want in 1 pack instead of waiting for 1 per dlc.

Islands: I’m putting my money on it being a theme dlc with a blend of Hawaiian/Caribbean/Polynesian like builds.
  1. Tasmanian devil
  2. Green sea turtle
  3. Foosa
  4. American flamingo
  5. Kiwi
  6. Tanuki
  7. Tree kangaroo
  8. Lord Howe stick insect
  9. Parrots set of 5
Highlands: can include tower viewers for guests to get better looks at animals as apart of the free update. Maybe a Tibetan or Swiss alps styled build.
  1. Coastal mountain goat
  2. Andean Bear
  3. Golden takin
  4. Markhor
  5. Gelada
  6. Lyrebird
  7. European Hare
  8. Coral snake
  9. Help me out WE set of 5
Desert: I cannot see a theme of desert as I think a Wild West theme would be better suited for an amusement park not a zoo.
  1. Collared peccary
  2. Roadrunner
  3. Rhea
  4. Hamadryas baboon
  5. Sand cat
  6. Blackbuck
  7. Golden Jackal
  8. Leopard gecko
  9. Moths set of 5

Northern: a free update could be bonfires or a new type of heat source for guests.
  1. Musk oxen
  2. Wolverine
  3. Saiga antelope
  4. Capercaillie
  5. Wisent
  6. Coyote
  7. Arctic hare
  8. Wood frog
  9. Koi, instead of set of 5 we have access to all the different textures of koi
Southern: update include adding bars for adults only and playground for children
  1. Coati
  2. Red Howler monkey
  3. Shoebill
  4. Perentie
  5. Red river hog
  6. Kiwi
  7. New Zealand Fur seal
  8. Jackson’s chameleon
  9. Macaws set of 5

Good pack ideas, though there should be a way to get a sloth and an old world porcupine since they’re probably the most generally recognizable mammals we don’t have a type of in the game yet.

Highlands birds exhibit: eagles, but not walkthrough of course.

I understand, although I'm not gonna say that it's entirely outta the question. At the Houston Zoo, in the South America Pantanal section, there is an area featuring rheas, tapirs, capybaras, anteaters, and screamers. This area has some scenery that is connected to gauchos, which are essentially South Cowboys.

So, for a Wild West theme, I can see, but I'd give it another name. I'd call it the Frontier theme, as an sorta joke, naming after the company but also because of the wild frontier.

Now, for 2023, what are my takes?

A few months ago, I would've assumed 2 more packs and nothing more, but it seems Frontier wants to do at least 1 more year of DLC. If that's the case, I can see a total of 6 more packs, at the most, and 4 at the least. My takes are:

Spring 2023 - Islands pack
  1. Tasmanian devil
  2. Hawaiian goose
  3. Fossa
  4. Kiwi
  5. Tuatara (E)
Summer 2023 - Drylands Animal pack
  1. Greater rhea
  2. Collared peccary
  3. Black rhinoceros
  4. Hamadryas baboon
  5. Serval
  6. Blackbuck
  7. Greater roadrunner
  8. Rainbow lorikeets (WE)*
  9. Budgerigars (WE)*
  10. Sun conures (WE)*
  11. Cockatiels (WE)*
  12. Lovebirds (WE)*
Fall 2023 - New World Tropics pack
  1. Spider monkey (any species)
  2. Black howler monkey
  3. Ocelot
  4. Curassow (any species)
  5. Two toed sloth (WE)**
4th Anniversary
  1. Dromedary camel
Winter 2023 - Mountains pack
  1. Spectacled bear
  2. Mountain goat
  3. Himalayan monal (thank y'all for introducing me to this beautiful bird)
  4. Gelada baboon
  5. Andean bird-of-the-rock (WE)
Spring 2024 - Feathers of the World animal pack
  1. Green pheasant
  2. Scarlet ibis
  3. Southern screamer
  4. Wild turkey
  5. Shoebill stork
  6. Victoria crowned pigeon
  7. Southern rockhopper penguin
  8. Scarlet macaw (WE)
  9. Military macaw (WE)
  10. Hyacinth macaw (WE)
  11. Blue-and-yellow macaw (WE)
  12. Sulfur-crested cockatoo (WE)
Summer 2024 - Old World Tropics pack
  1. Goodfellow's tree kangaroo
  2. Lion-tailed macaque
  3. Old world porcupine (any species)
  4. Red river hog
  5. King cobra (E)
* So, I chose these birds for a Drylands pack for a couple of reasons. Budgerigars and cockatiels are found in Drylands and deserts, if I'm not mistaken. As for the other 3, I chose them for similarities
** I honestly feel like the sloth, if it comes, would be in a WE, due to how it moves so little, less than any animal in the game. And before y'all say "koalas and reptiles", listen: I can handle a koala and a reptiles walking around, as I've seen that before. But a sloth? No, not in real-life

I'm guessing some flying birds will be introduced, since we now have walkthrough exhibits, though I don't know if we'll ever see huge free-flight aviaries.

Gift shops similar to restaurants?

Rainforest or Tropics pack?
