Prehistoric Kingdom

I'm honestly a bit reluctant to post this here because of potential wrath of the mods. But I just stumbled upon this game (called Prehistoric Kingdom) and it looks and plays EXACTLY like JPE

Apparently this game has been in development for a while. I went over to their website: http://prehistorickingdom.com/blog/
and checked out some of the building types and dino designs, building names are very similar. Looking at the trailer, it eeirily plays out the same way JPE does, even the terrain editor and fence/building editor look the same.

As much as i find JPE fun and exciting, as a fledgling game developer myself, this concerns me greatly. Now I hope this is just a case of parallel convergence. But the fact that you can purchase the alpha and download it means that potentially fdev could have gotten it, taken a look at it, made some changes and put it out, while the indie developer is still trying to get his alpha off the ground.

I just felt a bit crushed when I saw this. God I hope I'm wrong.

I very much doubt FDev is copying Prehistoric Kingdom, just by looking at the dates. JWE was in development for about 18 months (give or take iirc), and that demo came out in January. Going off of that, JWE had already been in development for some time before this demo dropped, and I doubt FDEV crammed in all the models and mechanics in the last 5 months of development.

I played the demo myself, and the building aspect actually doesn't have a similar feel if you ask me. It's more zoo tycoon-esqe, while JWE's building tools feels more like planet coaster. The dinosaur designs don't look the same either. Objectively, they're dinosaurs, and they need to have some similarities somewhere. But as far as skins and general shape go, they don't look like JP-style dinosaurs. PK is going for a more realistic angle, while the ones in JWE look exactly like they would from the JP franchise.

If anything, PK could have taken inspiration from JWE in some aspects. It's taken inspiration from other games already, like Saurian. (The triceratops models look exactly the same, even down to the adult skin.)

I was more going by the editor, the terrain and building editors behave the same, look more at how the game plays vs the thematic look.

also look at the concept art the design for the ranger station and viewing platform, very similar

And the alpha came out January 2017 not 2018, look at the date on the YouTube video.

As far as the thematic look of course if you're gonna make a JP game then you have to of course make it look like JP.

I just find it odd that the editors behave the same. Now if fdev and this dev both used the same engine from a common asset store or engine maker that could also explain it.

ah, sorry I don't know how else to say it except I don't see that at all.

But there is no alpha or whatever to purchase from them, just a very small free demo. I've been following them for a very long time they have made no mention of problems with JPE themselves. The game won't even be on early access until summer 2019, at least that is what they are currently shooting for.

No idea, does look like some inspiration one way or the other.

But on JWE it's using Frontier's own custom self-built engine, COBRA.

PK has been in development for aaaggges

I mean, it's dinosaur park builder/management game but I think that's where the similarities end. I don't think either could be accused of copying or even taking inspiration from the other one.

The building and customisation tools are far superior on PK for a start.

Why would you fear us, the only thing I'm contemplating is whether I should leave this thread here or move it to the Off-Topic: General Gaming Discussion forum.

The terrain tools they are using seem universal to every park/zoo builder. Raise, lower, flatten, etc. It will be interesting to see how this game turns out though. Could be fun.

The mods on the forums are very good, quite unlike some mods you may find on reddit (as one example)

Dude, JWE runs of Cobra, the engine designed by Frontier themselves. And its based on Planet Coaster, which is also on Cobra, which was developed 2014-2016. Both PK and JWE basically do what such games have been doing since the 90s: raise/flat/lower land, build fences, put animals in plus stuff needed to survive and a door. Link stuff by roads.

The notion that they 'downloaded the alpha, made some changes and put it out' is so outlandishly bizarre, I dont even know for sure if this is supposed to be a reference to some joke or not? :S
