To do this on a regular basis aim for a point roughly halfway between the planetary body and the station. As you start to get close adjust your flight path towards the station, so that at the point of exiting SC the planetary body is behind you and the station is in front of you. More often than not you will be facing the mail slot (and I have had occasions when I could have docked only by matching the rotational speed of the station).
I tried that often, but was not even sure that it would work like that ... thanks!
It doesn't always work, but you have a better chance than by just approaching the station. I have also seen fewer occasions of nearly docking with the back of long stations!
It would be nice if they had a back door on some stations.
Hah. One of the first things I did when I exited the station was fly around the back to see if anything was hidden. Even some space-grafitti would be cool.
