private mode

I see. Thanks for the correction. :)

Still, the main point stands. Solo & PG were always going to be a thing.

Indeed they were - along with the single shared galaxy state and mode mobility, as detailed in the FAQ published here at the start of the Kickstarter:

FAQ- Elite: Dangerous
How will single player work? Will I need to connect to a server to play?
The galaxy for Elite: Dangerous is a shared universe maintained by a central server. All of the meta data for the galaxy is shared between players. This includes the galaxy itself as well as transient information like economies. The aim here is that a player's actions will influence the development of the galaxy, without necessarily having to play multiplayer.

The other important aspect for us is that we can seed the galaxy with events, often these events will be triggered by player actions. With a living breathing galaxy players can discover new and interesting things long after they have started playing.

How does multiplayer work?
You simply play the game, and depending on your configuration (your choice) some of the other ships you meet as you travel around are real players as opposed to computer-controlled ships. It may be a friend you have agreed to rendezvous with here, or it may be another real player you have encountered by chance. All players will be part of a “Pilot’s Federation” – that is how they are distinguished from non-players – so you will be able to tell who is a player and who is a non-player easily.

You will be able to save your position in certain key places (probably just in space stations, but possibly while in hyperspace too, if we feel it is needed). A save-and-quit option will be freely available at those points, as will the subsequent reload, but there will be a game cost for a reload following player death. Your ship will still be intact in the condition it was when the save occurred, but there will be a game currency charge (referred to as an insurance policy) for this. This is to prevent the obvious exploit of friends cooperating and killing each other to get each other’s cargo. If you can’t pay, then it will accumulate as an in-game debt, and the police may chase you!

There are no multiplayer lobbies, and the game will be played across many servers, augmented by peer-to-peer traffic for fast responses. Session creation and destruction happens during the long-range hyperspace countdown and hyperspace effect (which is a few seconds only), so is transparent to the player.

We have the concept of “groups”. They can be private groups just of your friends or open groups (that form part of the game) based on the play styles people prefer, and the rules in each can be different. Players will begin in the group “All” but can change groups at will, though it will be possible to be banned from groups due to antisocial behaviour, and you will only meet others in that group.

I don't get the point of private groups for xbox. Why not just meet up in open? Whatever. let people play how they want, but imo it seems like a waste. They could be working on dev something for the game instead of PGs

I hope you're not insinuating that Xbox shouldn't have PG...

Every Xbox player has as much right to the mode as any PC player like myself. I for one am glad Xbox players will be able to play easily with their friends in a few weeks time.

Havnt insinuated anything. It's coming so dosnt matter. Players were always able to play easily with there friends with or without pg.

I still fail to see what impact PG's will have except for the pew pew crew looking for victims. All the rest of us will still be flying together and still playing the game irrelevent of which mode we play in.

If your game doesn't revolve around picking random Cmdrs as victims, you'll hardly notice.

Maybe I don't fully understand how pg fully works but you will only meet other players that u already know yes?

Yes, so the group chooses a guy to host "Mobius 2." Not the most effecient way, but it's a way to make it work.

Three words: "Get" "over" "it." Boohoo PvE players can now have as much fun as "Open or death" players. I'd likd to think this is well known, but PvE players outnumber PvP players as a general rule(talking gaming not just ED). Plus what are they doing that you could actually stop in a reliable fashion? Nothing really, just due to instancing. THEN there's solo. Beside all that this is not a PvP game so noone should be forced to play the ONLY mode that has not only PvP, but no way to police griefers on top of that(PG can have PvP after all, and kick the griefers out).

7 words, get over what you have lost me.

Indeed, but I regularly wing up with friends... my friends list is also full of folks who play ED. With the introduction of PG, all I'd be losing are the very occasional randoms.... and they are occasional, usually met at a station... usually they ignore all attempts at communication as they're too focused on shipping that next few hundred tons of slaves, killing or stealing that last NPC in the Hazres or CZ or just plain hanging outside a station looking for a victim of any description for some other self invented reasoning behind the act.

The in game comms are abysmal and aside from forum members or Facebook dwellers who have learned the value of the very basic, antiquated and clunky tools, those other randoms aren't really interested in passing chit chat as they work toward the inevitable Anaconda, Cutter or Corvette. If they're winged up, they're probably partied up too and can't be bothered passing time typing messages into a 1980's style pre internet comms box via poor tools.

Xbox players these days are used to at least some form of gamechat where they can hear local players on a global setting. Apart from ED... when was the last time you actually typed a message to another player in any game? In most online games I play regularly, it's even unlikely that many of the other players will have or use a headset and mic... never mind a keyboard. Modern console gamers don't want to chat or be sociable... they simply want to be competetive, their name at the top of the leaderboard... nothing else.

Some don't even realise the comms panel is there for players to pass messages to eachother, they either don't know how to access it, or they're so used to it being filled up with pointless, repetitive text messages from NPC's, they no longer read the nonsense it contains, heedless of what colour that text is... some don't use it simply because nobody has told them that the Xbox smartglass app for their phone or tablet works well with ED... or that they can fit a cheap wireless USB keyboard to their Xbox for text input....

After almost a year of having 99.9% of all friendly hails ignored, unnoticed or unanswered... or just being interdicted or shot at as I'm the only hollow rectangle seen on some wannabe's radar for days or weeks...I won't be missing much useful or meaningful input from randoms :)

Wasn't most players on you're friends list randoms at first because mine were. I'm on you're list as you are on mine( this is my pc gamer tag). I wouldn't have the joy of you not letting me get a word in edge ways when we winged up trading if you and other players played in pg.
Yes been ignored plenty of times but then my friends list is full of players who didn't ignore me.
The open galaxy will be worse of with you and other players not in it .

I'll still be playing in open, I'll use PG's for getting new pilots away from the starter systems and for instructing until they're able to at least deal with open mode as it is. After 1.6 and the silly weapons get here, open will be like a rerun of the OK corral... at least having PG, we won't just have the Billy no-mates solo mode to escape to :)

Was reffering to not wanting PG because they effect PP and BGS. People already use solo to cause same effect and FDev has said they don't see it as a problem. Though I admit I was a jerk and apologize, I want to be clear it is because this pointless debate has been raging forever and is ussually brought up by PvP-er's who just want human targets to kill(a PvE-ers natural enemy :p ).

Or they could just add a section of space designated open PvP only, have the regular statipre and missions and what not, but when your set up with a pve ship, the last thing you want is to be attacked on sight by 4 fdl's. Either way pg will be welcomed.
