Probably no news on the next expansion this month...

"We are very pleased with the success of Jurassic World Evolution, which has been our biggest launch to date," says CEO David Braben. "Elite Dangerous and Planet Coaster also continue to perform well, as our strategy of supporting, nurturing and enhancing each of our game franchises continues to deliver. I look forward to providing more details about our fourth game franchise, as well as our existing franchises, in the coming months."

Otherwise it would be weeks and not months?

Technically it could be next month. Since it's several franchies, they might not announce everything at the same time.

I didn't go into the forum's history but when does FD normally start to drop hints on the current year's schedule? It's usually in the first couple of weeks of January or early February, isn't it? Anyone check back that far? That's probably when they'll give us a hint about this year.

I think you're probably reading too much into that word. If the new game reveal isnt until the spring summer, how could it be anything other than months?

How about "I look forward to providing more details about our fourth game franchise in the coming months, as well as our existing franchises in the coming weeks." ;)

Previous schedule announcements were (with multi-update roadmaps in bold):
  • Aug 2015: Horizons 2.0 for December, at Gamescom 2015 (early August), and 2.1 for Q1 2016
  • Around Horizon 2.0's launch: 2.1 for Spring 2016, 2.2 for Summer 2016, and 2.3 for Autumn 2016
  • Mar 2016: Horizons 2.1 for May (6 week delay)
  • Aug 2016: Horizons 2.2 beta for Sep (launched in Oct)
  • Jan 2017: Horizons 2.3 beta for Feb (launched in Mar)
  • Aug 2017: Horizons 2.4 beta for same month (launched in Sep)
  • Oct 2017: Beyond 2018 roadmap given, with each 3.x set for a quarter
  • Jan 2018: Beyond 3.0 beta set for Jan too (launched in Feb)
  • Jun 2018: Beyond 3.1 set for same month (no beta)
  • Aug 2018: Beyond 3.2 set for same month (no beta)
  • Oct 2018: Beyond 3.3 beta set for same month (launched in Dec)

Possible. The big question is what we are getting in the meantime though. I doubt they'll release nothing but a few bug fixes this year (would probably be good for the game though).

Well, until the next big thing there probably indeed wont be another big thing. :p

Ok, so based on the above, ANY TIME between now and the release of the next (1) update and/or (2) DLC is when we'll find out what's coming up.

Ok, so now that this has been sorted out, who's doing what on the weekend?

3.3 was recently released. You could play that. It has some good bits.

I do enjoy 3.3 a lot, just pointing out that it would be the first time since 4 years that we don't get major updates every few months. I am pretty sure there is something else in the pipeline to keep us entertained if it's really Q4 for the next major expansion.

I would expect the first little snippets to start emerging around mid-February.

Takes the Hype Train a while to warm up.

I was hoping they’d release some information during their 25th anniversary celebrations.

Since they are working on 4.x they have a plan, unless that’s been slowed due to 3.3 bugs.

No doubt there is a plan, probably one pretty well fleshed out up to the final update, whatever and whenever that will be.

It seems incredibly unlikely that any planning for the next update would wait until the release of the previous update and be conducted during the span between that release and the first announcement. Most, if not all, of the initial coding for whatever is coming next is likely already done, which leaves stuffing it and stitching it together to integrate it.

How's that axiom go? "Failure to plan is planning to fail"?
