Problem with sightseeing missions

Hi!

I'm having trouble completing sightseeing missions. I have a Cobra MKIII with a couple of business class cabins and a basic discovery scanner, among other outfittings.

When I accept a sightseeing mission, I get to the system they need to go to, lock on the nav beacon they point me towards but when I get there the mission does not update. I've tried scanning with the discovery scanner but it doesn't pick up the nav beacon. I've tried everything I can think of and nothing works!

What am I doing wrong?

You need to drop out of supercruse by the tourist beacon, target it, and then fly close enough for your target scanner to scan it.

Thanks Worldoflard - I have already tried that... I drop out of supercruise, I approach it and nothing happens. I've tried everything from hovering about 5 metres from it to a number of kilometres - to no avail.

Maybe I'm using the wrong type of scanner or not scanning it properly? Even though I think I know, could you take me through the steps to scan a nav beacon as well as tell me which sort of scanner I need?

It's not where you think it is...

Hey Larry, I think you have the same issue I had, so hopefully this will fix it.

You have selected the Nav Beacon in your navigation menu and gotten there and dropped out of supercruise. Well, where you think the Nav Beacon is (that great big orange partial circle), isn't actually where it is!

Once you've dropped out of SC, there will be a white/grey object on your scanner. That is the actual nav beacon, and it's not where that orange circle is. You need to get that in front of your ship, and then target it (with "select target ahead"). That will select the real beacon (not its navigation marker), and if you keep it in front of your ship it will scan. Then voila!

There may be a few white markers on the scanner, so just hunt down the right one.

Jesus, thank goodness for forums, been trying to resolve a similar issue to this for the last 3 hours, jumping out of system, back in, buying all different kinds of scanners. Utterly frustrating, to add insult to injury the quest marker the passenger gave me actually pointed at a planet near the POI rather than the destination itself. It would be nice to play the game itself, than spending all my time fighting the interface/misleading quests.
