Newcomer / Intro Problems finding the letterbox

Does anyone have any tips for a quick way to find on which side the letterbox is on a Coriolis? Sometimes when I come out of Supercruise and the thing is spinning all over the place (as these Coriolis stations tend to do) I mosey up to it and end up flying around it for ages before I find the letterbox side and because of its shape you could easily be one 'panel' away from it and not realise. I could of course just stay parked a few km out until the letterbox side decides to slooooowwwwly spin round but thats pretty tedious. Just wondered if I'm doing something wrong, or if anyone else sometimes has this problem? I don't have an auto dock module as I love manual docking too much. Thanks in advance.

The letterbox usually face planet side.
When approaching in supercruise, i always fly inbetween the planet and the station and line up that way.
Otherwise, there are arrows on the stations pointing to the entrance.

The letterbox is always on the face that is rotating counter-clockwise.

Watch the station for a few seconds and it will be obvious. With some practice you'll get it every time in moments.

1. It is the anti-clockwise face. Might be brain achey to work out to begin with, but soon becomes second nature
2. Target the station, and the Hologram will have arrows on the sides pointing at the docking face

Arrows? really? don't suppose anyone could post a screenie that shows these arrows I should be looking for could they? Coriolis stations just look like a beautiful but confusing mass of lights and metal trusses to me. Thanks again :)

Ahhhh, now the fog is clearing. I'll try this second point you made, and start paying more attention to the rotation direction. Much obliged to ye all!! :)

I had problems at first with this too. The so called "arrows" indicator when requesting docking just confused me more.
What did work for me is not to go closer to the station right away, but stop for a moment and note it's rotation. As said by others here before me, look for the side that rotates counter clock-wise, and if you get visual confirmation of red and green lights, you are on the right track.

You will get used to it in time :)

I find those arrows much easier to see when the holo is green (ie for friend/ally). Red holo's I can barely make them out.

But approaching from planetside puts you forward of the slot 99% of the time

There they are.

I find this method words for me: Rotate until the station is spinning towards you. The entrance is on the right. If you are facing a clockwise spinning face then it is on the opposite side.

My technique is to spot whether the blinking lights are red or white. Align your ship so that the white lights will be above you using the headlook function. Fly below the White lights. Once the letter box is overhead stop dead, pitch up, request docking and head on in. Another clue is the other arriving ships. Where are they in relation to the station?

i prefer to fly to the slot in supercruise. this is as simple as approaching station with the planet behind you. get that right and you almost always drop out of supercruise facing the slot. the only time i don't do this is if i'm flying evasively to avoid interdiction.

if i'm not dropping out of supercruise in the right place then i use the hologram.

a further tip, once you pass through the slot the compass dot will then point at your docking bay (it was pointing at the slot).

after exiting supercruise I watch what is going on, the station rotates on an axis, and the front and back are the only two "static" sides, the entrance is always facing a planet so it is easy to work it out

Listen to the Reaper, this saves so much time.

Even knowing that you can target the station and follow the arrows, it can still be confusing at first. After playing for a few days though it becomes second nature and is really easy to find the letterbox. :)
