I just started playing last week, and just managed to get enough credits to buy and Cobra MKIII and start upgrading it. Somehow in the upgrades I have managed to knock out the boost on the ship. I get a boos failed insufficient captivator (or something like it). I get this even with max pips to engine and a maxd out engine bar. Any suggestions? Let me know if you need additional information.

Sounds like the Power Distributor isn't capable enough. What grade and class of PD is currently installed (and which thrusters)?
https://coriolis.io/outfit/cobra_mk_iii is useful for testing out ship builds - it will also tell you if you will be able to boost.
Power distributor is 3C , Power Plant is 4D same with Thrusters, andf actually I think that fixed it. I had a 2D power converter on there and had read about someone with a similiar problem replacing it. I did that and it worked. I guess I dont fully understand what all the ratings and stuff means. So confusion but in a good way.

Generally you want to run the biggest and highest rated power distributor you can afford. That way you can run weapons and still have distributor capacity for shields and engines.
Good choice the Cobra Mk3 as as starter ship. It is a good multi purpose ship and you can swap modules around to do mining, cargo runs, combat and do planet landings and try out the SRV.
