Newcomer / Intro Problems with key bindings.

Hi, just started to play today and I like how it looks, but I am getting quite desesperate with a problem I'm getting. I'm using a GPX Gamepad to play, and some of the key bindings I changed them to something more comfortable for me, and it works just fine, completed most of the tutorial missions, but I am incapable of finishing the advanced combat tutorial, because in any point of the fight or mission the controls go back to default, and sometimes even when going on the menu, options, and controls, the settings appear as the ones I putted there, but when I apply my settings and go back, they don't change the key bindings.

I've tried a lot trying to get help from the internet, since creating a copy of my custom bindings and changing it's name in appdata\local\Frontier developments\Elite dangerous\options\bindings both of the file name and code name, to change permissons and nothing, it allways sooner or later ignores my settings and goes to the default ones.

I would really appreciate some help, and thanks for your attention.

1. Don't worry about the Advanced Combat one, it is not easy (clue in the name ;) ) - most don't bother with it.

2. Bindings - the quirk here is that E D doesn't go by the file name, it looks for (and displays) the name in line 2 of the ".binds" file. Also keeping copies in the same directory confuses the game and you either get the wrong set or the changes don't get saved.

Never heard of it losing this in-game, but that might be the cause.

You might also want to look at the web-page for a "Reference Card Generator" that uses your "binds" file to produce a printable set of images. https://edrefcard.info/ - instructions on the page.

P.S. Welcome to the game.

I want to finish all trainings so I am sure I am familiar with the controls. I don't find the advance combat that difficult, is just that it changed my controls in mid fight, and I got many times 2 of the 3 enemies down, just now I actually finished it.

About the bindings, yep, I changed the name of the keymap in the bind file, and they didn't share any name, I just tried for the second time deleting the binding folder and start the game so it creates it again. Finished the advanced combat without problems, maybe deleting the folder again was the solution... But I'm uncertain if this will keep up.

And thanks for the welcome!

Welcome fellow noob. I had this same issue - there's only one "Custom" profile, so if you're experimenting between a custom Mouse/Keyboard and a custom Gamepad setup you'll find that it appears to "overwrite" what you had setup whenever you restart (or reenter the menus?).

I started out using keys only (if you can believe that), because that's how I played the original Elite on the BBC Micro. I actually found that quite natural in terms of controlling the ship and a couple of weapons, but ED has many more functions (and in-flight UI panels) you have to take care of which became overwhelming with keys only. Not to mention the number of times I accidentally launched a heat sink or chaff canister at the worst possible moment...

In addition to that, I want to get a Oculus, and I wouldn't be able to glance down at the KB to get the right key if I needed to (and I never was much of a touch-typist).

Now I've been able to map almost everything I need onto an Xbox One controller, and it's working out pretty well. Tip: I remapped the "bumper" triggers RB/LB to be a kind of "shift" key, so that I can overload the A/B/X/Y keys and the D-pad with multiple functions.

If there's interest I can type up my current gamepad scheme.

I've been playing this game from day one and I'll be very blunt with this. Edh is a very complex game hence why most, such as myself, consider it more of a Simulator than anything else. Very in depth and it has a very harsh learning curve, don't let this frustrate you cause you WILL get the hang of it. As far as the tutorials, well you learn more be just getting out there and testing your ship out of combat just to get the feel of what she can do. Keep in mind that ALL ship's handle differently so play around with any new ship's you might get in the future as well. As I mentioned I've been play for quite some time and I still learn new things to this day. I love the game and I hope you come to love it as well. Good investment as far as games are concerned and most importantly welcome to the endless entertainment you'll ever know. Fly straight and safe Commander, see ya out there....o7

Just as a reminder bindings can be changed and tweaked in flight.
