Problems with VR mode

I was a long time player of Elite Dangerous on Xbox One. Just downloaded the game on Steam and am starting a new character in my Meta Quest 3. But I'm having some problems. The character creation worked fine in 3D within the headset. When I launch the game, the main menu has me in fully immersed 3D in some sort of launch bay. But when I click Start, the game opens a slightly buggy flat screen window, hovering in front of me and expects me to play the game in that. What gives? I've got the app set to automatically launch in SteamVR. I've also got in the in game graphics set to VR - High. Any thoughts?

yes on foot is no vr terrible letterbox view thats it
vr only works properly in the ship or srv
its just :poop:2D letterbox screen on foot and ya gotta live with it else switch to a normal monitor if spending a long time outta ship or srv is my advice
some create a second desktop icon shortcut with the /novr command for that so they can play the full screen on foot half of the game at a native monitor res with little fuss

Did you manage to fix it? I'm experiencing the same problem on a meta quest 3s?
Is it really only 2D on foot? Or is there anything I can do about it?

If you see the above reply - the on foot portions have no VR support. You only have VR when in your ship. Back when I used to play the ship was all there was, but I'd like to experience the on foot portions and won't do so unless/until this is fixed - found it literally nauseating. Ship stuff works great, though!

Thanks for your reply, hopefully they will fix it, do you know if there are any planned solutions for this by the developers in the near future?

since 1st complained about in 2021 FD still have no future plans regarding further on foot VR compatibility🤷‍♂️
so if ya really wanna play that side/half of the game a native res monitor is currently ya best bet like any typical ist person shooter

It'll just be a pain to stop the game. Remove the headset. Tweak setting to not launch natively in VR. Fire up the game again. Complete the on foot portion. Stop the game. Return the settings to launch in VR. Put on and power up the headset again. Reload the game... I think I'll stay in my ship.

Okay, thanks, have a nice day.

as there is basically no requirement to ever leave the ship ya why not.......................
still if ya decide youve had enough of vr or if it breaks down the whole game does await as such
some even play using that letterbox screen dont ak me how they can put up with that mind you 🤷‍♂️

I could deal with the letterbox if I had to, but it had glitches. There were spikes of random... polygons? Visual noise, that kept shooting up into the letterbox from below.

So what you are sayomg is that the on foot gameplay is jist a bonus and most of the gameplay is happening on the ship, which I can play in VR?

The original game had no on foot play. It was all in ship. So, yeah, the game is built around that. Over time they added a mode where you could drive around on a planet's surface in a rover type vehicle. And now, I guess, they have on foot play. Though you may have to enter space stations to get missions. (That used to be handled in ship, too).

You have on foot VR (including carriers) in the external camera, so you can wonder at what would have been possible. You just can't interact with anything.

Or at least it was so last time I checked. It was a political decision back then, and we can be glad we got this (gorgeous) space VR support at least🤷‍♂️

So, for the time being, I use Tobii 5 eyetracking when ground operations may be necessary, and my Quest 2 via VirtualDesktop for everything else. The SRV also still supports VR.

O7,
🙃

NB. This was how they advertised the game initially. It's just the focus went elsewhere. And Braben was proud they were one of the first in their anniversary stream. So.

Could you explain to me please how can i use the Tobii 5 and the Virtual desktop?

all ship based missions can be picked up from inside the ship
all on foot missions can be picked up you guessed it on foot

i would not describe on foot gameplay as a bonus rather its a whole different game or half of the whole game in it's own right with its own engineers for upgrading on foot based weapons and PPE suits , its own type of exploration which is exobiology , its own type of combat/missions and its own means of getting around the galaxy as you can basically book or call an uber if desired...........
or pick a side to fight for and drop into a war zone via frontline solutions dropships.(or use ya own ship to get there)
equally you don;t ever have to fly a ship if you don't really want too................

i suggest you find and watch some on foot missions and eg on you tube or as i suggested you use a normal display monitor in fullscreen rez and discover yourself.

its a game of two halfs just like one of the best gravity based games on the world ⚽
the best non simulated spacegame being tictac-tow of course ;)

The Tobii Eyetracker 5 is a hardware device, about the same as TrackIR, but without the silly hat. Tobii software supports Elite Dangerous, too, so you can turn around your head in 6DOF. Apart from gaming, I use it as a Windows Hello device for logging in biometrically, that's really cool :)

VirtualDesktop is - the name is misleading - a very prominent third-party app for streaming PC VR data to your headset. It's faster and better than any other solution IMHO (including Steam or Meta software solutions) and comes with its own VR runtime. As the Quest devices - unlike true, cabled PCVR headsets as the Oculus Rift and such - are wireless and just transfer the PC image frames via WLAN to the headset, requiring very fast image encoding and decoding on both sides, this is a crucial component for me. It has the best image quality of them all and the lowest possible latency too. It's commercial though, costs about 20 EUR and is on sale right now (for another 15 hrs). For Quest devices, absolutely make sure you buy it from the Meta Quest store, as the versions you get from Steam are for other devices.

HTH, O7,
🙃
