Procedural Names

There's nothing more immersion breaking than coming across an Insp Gadget, or Eccentria Gallumbits.

Can names for NPCs not be made via a procedural technique, to keep them spacey, futuristic and varied?

A bit too many npcs to be named, probably. And i don't see anything wrong with those names. :D Insp Gadget seems like a very handy name, and Eccentria Gallumbits is probably, erm... eccentric person?

I didn't mind the 'naming NPCs' thing, I don't even mind the occasional joke or quirk, but when almost every name is facetious it gets tiresome.

When I first started playing, my very first death was caused by an NPC named "Cuppa Tea". I have mixed feelings about that name.

EDIT: Besides, it's not like having "lore-friendly" NPC names would fix the problem that is immersion. There will still be players around with similar names flying around.

I think you'll likely find that a lot of the 'immersion breaking' NPC (and Station, and System) names are those chosen by backers of certain Kickstarter levels. Sure, FD are a little to blame for not rejecting some, but they'd have been labelled Scrooges if they'd rejected many of the ones some people are unhappy with.

Absolutely agree!

I just wanted to create a topic addressing how much it annoys me to find myself in a "oh isn't that funny?" Universe while the game tries to be "Dangerous".
"Oh look, Abe Lincoln, oh look, Isaac Newton, oh look, Amelia Earhart, oh look -> another prominent/famous person..." gah.
Even worse, way worse, are names that aren't even names. What the hell?
Like "Whogivesatoss" (not making this up).

I would expect that names will change till 3300... but come on, let's keep it real, authentic and immersive.
Latter one makes or brakes the deal in that kind of game I feel.

Isambard Kingdom Brunel interdicked me today. I liked it. killed him I would have thought he would have something better than an Adder

I dont mind the kick starter names, thats only fair, but they should be kind of rare. More spacey names needed I think, proper procedural.

and that's the problem with a random generator... its 'random' I dunno I am starting to think 'random' isn't as 'random' as it once was. Or someone is just fixing the dice on me.
