Is anyone else fascinated by the idea of artificial life and how far it can possibly go? I'd love to see more of it in games.
I was watching a couple of videos last night on procedurally generated cities and they looked beautiful. And there are games that have simulated human life(sorta) like Sims and GTA, but I'd love to see this concept pushed a bit further with improved AI, and the simulated life as a more central element. People that don't feel scripted, but go about their lives on a wider scale because their game life depends on it. Work, shopping, reproduction, etc. I know the scope of something like this would be huge, but today's technology certainly would allow for it.
A company called Natural Motion actually started using concepts from evolution and natural selection to improve their virtual stick figures. AI that went from falling straight on it's face and kicking around in circles, to ones that walked perfectly after 20 generations. And now their little simulated men can run, fight and perform other complex tasks.
The reason I'd like to see this area developed further is because it has the potential to revolutionalise games. So I'm sure there must be some pretty smart people working on it, and I hope they make some progress pretty soon. Without bustling cities(or star ports) a lot of games like ED and SC just feel so empty. Diamond City in fallout had an OKish feel to it, but then everything is still so scripted and dull.
So yeah, love to see more games come to life with large crowds of people with a wide range of emotions and responses to player interaction.
If anyone knows about any upcoming games or projects please let me know. Would love to look into it. Mass Effect Andromeda for one is looking a bit promising.
