I have a very straightforward question, but I would like a straghtforward answer (please, no guesses)

If I already have traveled more than 5k ly before even meeting Marco, do I need to take another 5k ly trip after I get the invitation from Palin in order to unlock him? Would my previous trip count?

As long as you have been 5000 Ly from your starting system you should be fine. You can check that on your statistics page in the right hand HUD. There is no need to take another trip.

I took the trip specifically for Palin and didn't get his invite until I was like 5042 Ly (or some such number) out as I was checking it frequently. Then again maybe it took an extra minute or two to get the message sent out that far after I crossed the 5000 threshold since I was still jumping away.

You will be fine. Confirmation is given in the check list for opening Palin in your right hand panel (which I think was said above). But make sure you were reasonably over 5000 lyr, not just close.

As others have said, you should be fine. But look on your right hand screen under Statistics. It should read something like this...

Keep in mind (as others have said) that it's not the total distance traveled. It's the max distance from start.

I would go so far as saying It Is Preferred to do your 5000 ly + journey first - I just did mine and used "some" of the exploration data to become immediately allied with Sirius (to unlock Macro prior to Palin)
