Engineers Professor Palin is being a

So I've just unlocked Palin and restarted the game. I'm wanting to upgrade my dirty drives that Farseer has upgraded to G3 to G5 but Palin only sees them as G1 and tells me this grade has been completed. No Poo Sherlock.

Have I got to remove my G3 upgrade and start again? Surely this is stupidity at it's N'th degree :S

Just because you have earned enough favour for Farseer to make G3 more mods for you, Palin isn't going to love you enough to do G4 mods for you right away. Look how much favour you have built up. THAT'S the level that he will mod for you. It's clearly displayed on the screen. Just build up favour with him.

It's *always* been the case that you have to earn engineer favour for them to do that level of mod. Since day 1 of engineers.

As to time wasted, it will take a negligible amount of junk mats and about 5-10 minutes to generate sufficient trash mods to unlock level 4 mods with Palin. Probably only twice as long as your post took.

OP, if this trivilest of trivial things is making you rant to the forum, you have chosen the wrong game to play.

You still need to level up the Engineer to do the G4 upgrade. This is no different from the old engineers.

What?? You mean to say professor Palin won't do level 4 upgrades for you as soon as you unlock him?

How very strange! Because all the other engineers do level 4 upgrades straight away when you unlock them........right?

And apparently if you got him to G5 before the revamp you have to do it again. I have multiple ships with G5 Dirty drives from Palin, I left for a year and just came back. Now when I go to him the Engineer panel claims I have G5 unlocked (right hand console under status) but when I arrived I had to unlock G3, then G4 before G5. Which means I have to go grind some selenium since I showed up with 15 G5 mats but zero G4.

Sigh, not sure I care enough about engineering to redo that grind for all engineers. Not sure there's an efficient way to engineer any more.

That is probably just the downgrade for that single thruster - are you aware of the recent engineering changes?

I was but only second hand and my understanding was flawed. You're right it was a downgrade. I hadn't grasped that each module had to be worked all the way through the grades.

It's likely an improvement for the min / max approach but it's more effort for the 'good enough' crowd. Oh well, two thrusters upgraded, will worry about the others some other day. On to other things.
