Engineers Professor Palin still locked?

Hey Guys,

it seems that I might have a little problem with unlocking Prof. Palin. Right now I'm about 5,5k LY away from my spawn system yet Professor Palin appears to be still locked.
When I look at the engineers overview it states that I have reached the distance of 5000 LY but Palin is still locked. Am I missing something? Anyone else encountered this?

I don't want to go back, finding out it was all for nothing :-(

You need to come back to the bubble and sell the data. Otherwise it doesn't count. People would fly 5k ly with a hauler and than use selfdestruct. You need to make 5k ly back so that you have 10k

Ah ok, thanks for the info. I read that I could sell exploration data to improve my ranking with Palin, does that mean I won't be able to do that since I need to sell the data elsewhere?

Yes you have to unlock him first to get access to his base to sell data there

Dont forget the 25 units of unknown fragments . The 5k just unlocks the meeting requirements.

OP, have you ranked up Qwent to over level 3? That's when I got the invite email from Palin.

I don't think this is true. Someone told me they flew 5K in an Asp and blew themselves up. You can also see the Distance From Start tick up as you travel, and that seems to be the requirement for Palin.

Oh boy, I'm really not much into exploring and just wanted to get it over with, now I have to find them also? I'm so glad my Corvette is almost completely modded and I can go back to fun stuff.

Yes the unknown fragments are a walk in the park compared to the 5k. Also as someone else has mentioned you have to rank up with qwent

not true. self destructing after 5k works. but the data is handy for levelling.

Quick update: Palin just got unlocked, now he asks me for the fragments which means, I should have access to his base and be able to sell the data there, should I not?

nope. you need to bring him the unknown fragments first, after that you can use services at his stations (like universal cartographics).

Well, I sold 6 million of exploration data to rank up with the Ant Hill Mob, because when I went to Palin after completing the 10k run there was no cartographic option. I got the fragments quickly but I guess I will rank up the old fashioned way, I am already at three burning up some sulfur and whatnot.

Thats not true. You need to do 5K from the bubble, but sometimes you may also need to give it some time to update. I had to log out and log in to get my palin invite. The progress bar for Palin seems to round off to the nearest 50 LY and also can take time to update, but the value compared is how much you actually traveled from your starting system. You can see that value in your exploration statistics.

I think they only made that statistic available fairly recently. Perhaps when Horizons was released, so its ok. I didnt know myself until another CMDR mentioned it on the forums.

I went 5089 LY, saw that Palin was still locked. Logged out to Main Menu and back in again and got the mail from Palin and he was unlocked. Went back 5000 LY and grabbed 25 unknown fragments (Or whatever they are called). Flew to Palin and donated the fragments. Logged out and back in again to unlock the cartographer in his station, sold the data and got to rank 3. Then I did about 200 rank 1 updates (had a lot of low level materials) to get to level 5.
