News Progress on Horizons

The Elite Dangerous team are working very hard getting ready for the Horizons beta next week. I have been impressed at what I’ve seen, it’s looking really beautiful; they are doing amazing things.

As always we’ve come across and solved quite a few issues. Our game is already using 64 bit data structures internally, and has been since the Kickstarter, but we’ve had to make a late decision to move to 64 bit OS support only (for Horizons), as some of the things we are doing with compute shaders have proved unreliable on Windows 32, especially with certain graphics cards even with the latest drivers.

So 2.0 and the Planetary Landings beta will be Win64 only. Season one will remain supported on 32 bit as well as 64 bit, until sometime next year at least. The good news is this doesn’t affect the majority of players; over 99% of our existing players are already running a 64 bit OS, but I’m afraid the roughly 0.5% on our last hardware survey who were still running a 32 bit OS will have to upgrade to run Horizons (most of these people may have upgraded anyway as they were still on DX10).

The team are working very hard, including this weekend to get the beta ready. The compute shader issues have caused us some delays, but it is well worth it. We are pushing this technology harder than we think anyone else has pushed it, and the results are great – the quality has continued to get better than those shown in my sneak peeks so far.

It will be tight for Tuesday but hopefully we can still achieve this date. It is looking and feeling really good, but if we find another major issue before Tuesday, we’ll let you know.

I will remain on this thread answering questions for the next hour, and will try to do a ‘sneak peek’ tomorrow too.

Right on Commander!

Thanks David, out of curiosity, does this mean that those 32bit users who have already pre-ordered Horizons are entitled to a refund?

I'm (pleasantly) surprised it's that high!

Are there any plans to have bookmarking/home systems/other "nice-to-have" features in the Galaxy Map during Season 2?

I appreciate it's likely not the highest of priorities, but the Galaxy Map doesn't feel like it's got a huge amount of love other than the addition of the Powerplay map, despite in my opinion being one of the most impressive (visible) pieces of tech in the game.
As I said to Adam Woods at EGX, "it's a little jarring that your 3300-era spaceship computer has less capability for remembering things than a Nokia 3310" ;)

Thanks for your time! :)

Fantastic, David!

Every single move you guys are doing in the 1.5 Beta in regards to SCB and Hull Reinforcements are in the right direction. Very well done!

Hi David, thanks for the update. Given the issues around compute shaders and OS compatibility, I'd be interested to know if the minimum specifications have altered at all, and if the Beta is likely to work with SLI setups?

[I'm running SLI GT650M on a 'gaming' laptop that's a few years old, and I get really good SLI performance on ED (pretty much doubling framerates). I'm hoping that Horizons will scale just as well!]

Good to know, well people with 32-bit will have one more reason to upgrade.

Thank you for all the hard work - will wait patiently for beta even if it will not make it on Tuesday :)

Thank you so much for this update, things seems to roll very well :) Crossed fingers for tuesday then ;)

Fingers and toes crossed for Tuesday then as I've just booked Wednesday off work!

Great to hear the progress and if you're impressed David, then we'll all be blown away! Many of us have been waiting 30 years for this moment :D

Yes, I was too. We were spending a lot of time dealing with driver crashes on Win32, so this seemed a much better option, especially given there may not be a single person in that camp, given that Horizons is DX11 only.

Anyone on DX11 but with a Win32 OS can have a refund on Horizons of course - but we don't think there will be anyone in that position.

Top man!

Many thanks for the heads up DB! It is unfortunate that some will have to upgrade their OS, but I'm looking forward to seeing how this improves things.

Also, good luck to the team getting Horizons ready for next Tuesday!! :)

Hi David,

how about creating an "Iron Man" play option free to play?
When killed give the player the option to resume when buying the game or to restart from scratch.
That could well serve as a demo and drag a lot of players into the game.
As well as give the fraction their will that requested an iron man mode.

Next nice to have would be the possibility to trade paint job amoung players.
Maybe let paint jobs go out of sale after a while and make them tradeble for in game money after lets say three months or so.
That would be another wish that a lot of backers had... vanity items also for in game money.

Good luck for tuesday :)

Agreed - it would be nice. Easier than leaving a Sidewinder there!
