Aren't the NPCs names from the people who were backers or something? As in, they aren't really reflective of Frontier at all?
Some, not all. Impossible to tell if it came from a backer or some FD database.
I've always assumed that those that look like they could be real names are FD's, those with names like that are probably backers.
The joke is that it's true.
IF Frontier is to blame for the NPC name at all, maybe they are saying they are realists and that an NPC by that name should be killed.
Then again, they're probably not saying that either. Hey, Frontier is just selling the virtual guns, they're not telling you how to use them!

One of the backers called their NPC 'Hexcess Gaymurs'.
Another called their NPC 'Jebediah Kerman'.
I've also seen a few other silly names elsewhere too.
