[PROPOSAL DISCUSSION] FPS Module opportunity and problems

Not to steal Jenner's role, but I love you guys. Thanks for suggestion, ideas and appreciation.
If you could see me as I typed those TL;DR... you've seen something akin to Smeagol :/
Weak and Schizophrenic...

Now, You all raise more than a valid point.
Also @Jabokai: Actually agree that most of what I wrote is not EVA. So far I've seen EVA is just a part of FPN.
And yes, I didn't flesh that out. At all.

I'm willing though. Let's see if/when something good comes out of that.

I'd like to tackle on also Death. Brrrr.... that sounds bad-
Let's say to get on with the Death business... Ehrrrr not better-

Well you got it. ;)

Well then, after this last Dev Diary and the mention of Player controlled missiles, it appears even better to have a secondary member of your crew to man one of the many Secondary Turreted Weapon Stations! :D

Yay!

Ya I think one topic Walking on ships should be Rantings and how they don't like it. While this topic deal with Constructive ideas how to make fps work.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.

I haven't been very active in this thread, but I do have to say it's awesome just how much thought and work you put into all of this. Great work!

And now I go to spread peace and love to other threads.... ;)

uh oh that don't sound good .

My biggest concern with the EVA expansion will be the adjustment of switching from my flight stick to the keyboard/controller. Worse still while wearing the Oculus at the same time.

Not to mention that FPS gameplay can be more uncomfortable than a cockpit experience in VR.

Yeah, good points.
Course a lot of folks will be using keyboard/mouse or gamepad so changing controllers won't be an issue.

I play arma 2&3 with keyboard/mouse on foot, a joystick when flying, and steering wheel/pedals when driving
it does involve a bit of shuffling stuff about but it's doable...when you can see.
Can't see Oculous helping though.

Switching over with the goggles on is going to be pain so I think I will be sticking to mouse and keyboard myself.

Being able to wander around stations wearing an OR would be amazing. I sincerely hope they choose first person and not third.

You know what, you are right; being able to walk around the stations in 1st person will be awesome. I need to build a mount so I can push the joystick out of the way and grab my mouse

The way I see it, everything is ready for Frontier to announce at the GamesCon that the first pay-for DLC will be - *Dun dun dunnnn* FPS!

Why, let me enlighten you. Also everything is probably a figment of my imagination... :p

1) In the trailer (with the cool Royal Blood song) there's an awful lot of humans in the ship and all over the place. Yeah- weak I know, but it gets better.

2) We had pilots in our cockpits since the beginning and as of late we can finally see the pilots in others' ships. Better, no?

3) Let's face it Star Citizen will have that soon- a good idea then to put it out first! :D (I'm almost joking here- Almost)

4) It's the best bang for buck, as of now- with plenty of space for improvements. I mean it, space stations and ships are basically ready. Nicely modelled and with plenty of structures. And it definitely pays off more to have first this nailed solidly into gameplay *BEFORE* we start landing on planets, because...

5) If we are allowed to land, there's going to be a GREAT, HUGE, amount of people whining about "How sad it is to be on the surface of a planet but be able to do nothing to it, yadda yadda"... See, we FIRST learn to walk- and then we can run (outside).

6) I totally dreamt that last night so I know it is true- I'm the Kwisatz Haderach... best friend... on spacefacebook... without him knowing it... :D

So, since all this is obviously true...

I hereby SelfBUMP my thread to remind everyone, I'm an amazing game designer! :D

...

Don't hate me- lotsa love...

Avoiding FPS anarchy:

If FD don't dumb down death in FPS mode and don't make it meaningless they could avoid the COD and Battlefield type free-for-alls some people are worried about. Knowing death is meaningless often makes players reckless and play in a manner they normally wouldn't if more was at stake. Anarchy reins. Those who have played traditional FPS games, even the GTA's, know that there is always one who thinks he's Rambo.
I'm a long-time FPSer (Battlefield series since BF1942; BF4 killed it for me). I guess FPS mode could go two ways - Thief/Elder Scrolls-like and/or BF-like. They could do both - for example in the final stages of a civil war, players would have to force their way into stations, disembark, and complete a series of objectives using a mechanic similar to BF's rush mode or Fuel of War's Front Line mode. The problem with this is that it's hard to do FPS bots well - they tend to either suck or have the ability to headshot you from 300m away. I can't see it working like Planetside 2 unless there were both a central server and enough players. A CW in Sol or Achenar, yeah - there would be a lot of CMDRs, but in HIP 234541... No.

I suspect that FD would prefer something more like Elder Scrolls - a sandbox experience that doesn't require lots of players in one instance to play, and would be well-suited to co-op between small groups of players. Missions to capture Tharglets could be fun - go down to the planet surface, and track it while surviving, or tracking an assassination target who's gone into hiding somewhere really out the way. It could be great fun.

As for death, bodies are expensive. I have no problem with a rebuy mechanic. If a lore explanation were strictly necessary, I'd suggest that as part of the medical scan all pilots undertake when they dock (to prevent breakouts and the like), a blood sample and a brain scan is taken. While the scan can't be decoded, it can be stored and imprinted.
