Proposal for Player Apartments in Elite Dangerous

Introduction: As an avid fan and dedicated player of Elite Dangerous, I am excited to present a proposal that aims to enrich the player experience within the game. I am fully aware of the exceptional work that Frontier Developments has put into creating and maintaining the vast universe of Elite Dangerous, and I am enthusiastic about contributing an idea that could potentially enhance the immersive nature of the game.

Proposal: Player Apartments - A New Dimension of Personalization: The proposed concept is to introduce "Player Apartments" as a new gameplay element within Elite Dangerous. These apartments will serve as a personal space for players to unwind, strategize, and customize their experiences, providing an additional layer of engagement beyond spacefaring activities.

Apartment Sizes and Upkeep: The player apartments will come in three sizes: Small, Medium, and Large. Each size will offer distinct spaces and features tailored to the player's preferences and requirements. Here's a breakdown of the sizes and their associated weekly upkeep costs:

Apartment Size
Weekly Upkeep Cost
Small10,000 credits
Medium100,000 credits
Large1,000,000 credits
Apartment Features:

  1. Armory: A customizable loadout area where players can configure and fine-tune their equipment and ships.
  2. Lounge: A space where players can relax and stay informed about the galaxy by watching Galnet news broadcasts enhanced with relevant images.
  3. Bedroom: A restful haven where players can log off or simply enjoy a change of scenery.
  4. Office: An area dedicated to reviewing the Codex, messages, and managing in-game correspondence.
Apartment Design and Customization:

  • The small apartment will be a compact, all-in-one layout, while the medium and large apartments will feature individual rooms and a spacious entryway.
  • A "Permit Display Wall" will showcase the player's hard-earned permits, adding a sense of accomplishment and personal history.
  • A programmable "Window Display" will allow players to project various scenes, such as bustling cityscapes, serene forests, or distant planets, creating a more dynamic and immersive environment.
Personalization and Themed Styles: To further enhance player engagement, themed apartment styles could be introduced as purchasable content using Arx. Themes might include Empire, Federation, Alliance, and Independent styles, allowing players to align their apartments with their allegiances and preferences.

Conclusion: Elite Dangerous has captivated players with its vast universe and intricate gameplay mechanics. The introduction of Player Apartments offers a new dimension of personalization, immersion, and engagement. By expanding the game's content in this manner, you can create a more dynamic and fulfilling player experience, fostering a stronger connection between players and the Elite Dangerous universe.

I am genuinely passionate about the Elite Dangerous community and the game itself. It is my sincere hope that this proposal resonates with the development team at Frontier Developments. Your continued dedication to delivering exceptional gaming experiences is evident in the game's ongoing evolution, and I am humbly offering this idea to contribute to that legacy.

Thank you for considering this proposal. I eagerly await the opportunity to see Elite Dangerous reach even greater heights.

Sincerely,

Andy Prokopchuk

Similar ideas have been proposed many times, especially as a way to customise some sections of a FC.
It would be a nice addition for many, its desirablility being proportional to its unlikelihood.

Passionate enough about the game to use corporate speak?

I think the actual devs passionate about the game don't need suggestions dressed up in those terms to appeal to them and corporate management who might probably isn't reading the forums.

I feel like the showroom/player housing stuff is something MMOs do to add in some endgame grind because it's cheaper than adding actual content. Elite might largely be at that stage too with a lot of the events being repeats using old assets like the recent guardian/thargoid battleground.

I'm not sure how that amounts to anything, but anyway..

That may be true in some cases but it's not so much since games like Valheim use them as an integral part of the game. I would like to see some purpose for apartments in Elite apart from being endgame money sinks but at the same time I think that now we have legs in the game, having a place to call home makes a lot of sense so I see no reason to not have them, even if they are initially cosmetic. Though of course, the balance between resources/development time in relation to other things in the game is a major factor.

Kinda black pilled at the moment? Been watching the Ghost Giraffe streams when I can, they're very enjoyable seeing what y'all get up to though I get that burn out is thing too, I've experienced it myself, especially when there's other things going on. o7

On my carrier I have a room that is only accessible by me & anyone in my team. As far as rules go I think any other private place could use the same rule, and more is better for sure.

But I never use the carrier bridge for anything other than a bit of variety, and I don't think I'd use an apartment either unless it offered some unique functionality. Not something I'm personally looking for.

As far as a useful feature is concerned the only one I could think of that might make it worthwhile, custom ARX cosmetic packs could do it, but that could be done for ship/carrier interiors too 🤷‍♂️

While ship interiors are much desired by players, I think expanding on the current areas available to players both on carriers and stations should be done, and could probably be done much sooner, there's much that could be added to gameplay there, even including possible combat on some of the stations in certain areas. if it includes more personal spaces for players I won't disagree with that, I may not use it, but it would be disappointing if only personal spaces were added in such an expansion.

You can still have fun in the game and I do, but it's increasingly hard to find novel stuff to do. A player apartment with an achievement trophy case is more focused on reliving past glories than moving forward and in terms of gameplay it'd go the way most recent additions go where players check it out once and then are done with it.

There was a recent threat about cozyness in Elite that had more unique ideas than a space apartment (not even a space house/mansion/castle!).

Also the "oh let us buy cosmetics for feature X with ARX" thing is a really bad suggestion, games where you can earn cosmetics through gameplay are inherently better and you're unable to even imagine the best of all possible worlds.

I mean I guess someone who bases themselves out of a static station and doesn't go anywhere might use it, but...

I have a spaceship. I like to go places. It has a hyperdrive on it.
Maybe I'm unusual considering the number of players who insist on just staying in the starter system and hanging around there (and did the same back when they were hanging around eravate too) but once I got into the position to be considering anything that charges rent, I was way too nomadic to be thinking about staying in one place for long. The only time I thought about "home stations" before carriers went live was as a place to transfer my stuff to periodically somewhere within a 100ly radius of wherever I was operating, which changed a lot.

That's why you can rent multiple places.
