Proposal to change ship names.

Hello, fellow Commanders and Commandresses!

I'd like to propose the change to the ship names. What's with this snake theme? Aren't snakes aggressive and generally nasty violent animals? Why can't we have the Brony ship names instead? Like we can rename Anachonda to Rainbow Unicorn or Cobra to Pinkie Pie? I think this would be the good start to make ED the better place where we all can be friends and co-exist in peace and happiness. Remember: friendship is magic!

Absolutely, this proposal has my one hundred percent support. I'm right on this. Friendship/is/ magic and I wish more people would get that!

Let me just check the temperature in hell first, I'll be right with you come ski season!

History and Tradition? Nearly all the ships in Elite have that. It's kind of why car makes keep to the same name 99% of the time, brand recognition etc. So sure 'in your mind' please rename your anaconda to what you want, but for brand recognition in the game it is quite helpful to know an Asp is heading your way, and not so useful if it was called just about anything else. So that's a no thanks from me :)

They plan to add this feature, the name of your ship will gain reputation alongside the pilot (you), and add to the pilots reputation. But if the ship dies, you lose that rep, but can just re-name it back to the old name minus the rep ;)

I believe they are talking about personal ship names, nick names if you will. So instead of looking at at CMDR whatshisface and seeing 'Eagle', it would be 'Eagle - The flying mouse' if you will :p

While people dont tend to name their cars they do tend to name their aircraft and their is a long history of pilots and company's giving their aircraft names. Some names aircraft names are more famous than the aircraft like the Enola Gay, Gimli Glider, Spirit of st Louis, I could go on.

I'm not sure what I'd name my ship. Something sensible, that's for sure. And with the word "Fist" in it. I really like that word.

"The Emperor's Fist"

"The Fister of Mercy"


Or perhaps some snappy wordplay, like "The Split Infinitive", or "The Spurious Apostrophe".


On second thoughts, it might not be a good idea to let (some of) us name our own ships.

Giving us the ability to name our ships, whilst it could be interesting and fun, I don't think it will really mean much. If FD add the option to add decals to your ship then sure .... but it all comes down to the usual Immersion level and preventing people from being stupid and using 'names they shouldn't'.

I don't think naming will happen - you have a commander name - that's sufficient I think.

No the OP seems to be talking about the actual ship model names = Asp, Viper, Anaconda.

So, NO, I do not agree, these should remain the same, and I am sure FD will quite rightly ignore that suggestion.

Giving your ship a personal name is a different subject - that I agree with and I believe the option is coming.
