Proposal to change ship names.

Nope, I like them and I don't have the nostalgia of 1984 Elite either.

Everything even in real life uses names of something too, for example the Helldiver, Falcon, Bluebird, these are aircraft named after birds. This is just the way us humans go about language and naming things.

Even in other games it uses certain naming themes, I'm going to use EVE as an example since it's a space game and has cool names for ships, certain races will have their ships named after a certain theme, such as Caldari having names of winged creatures or mythlogical creatures, from the Chimera capital ship, to the Blackbird ECM ship, the Osprey, Tengu, etc. The Gallente have their own theme of Greek mythology such as Helios, Ishkur, Eris, etc. Then the Minmatar have Norse mythology names (durr, CCP is Icelandic any ways :p), such as Nidhoggur, Muninn, Huginn, etc, and then it also uses canine names for some ships like Wolf, Hyena, Cheetah, etc. They also use different parts for different types/tiers, for e.g the Norse mythology names are reserved for larger ships like capital ships or very specialised ships, where as the other smaller ships like frigates use canine names.

They're just naming themes and Elite has its own that it adopts and also is reflected in the design of ships, like the Cobra looking like a snake head. I like Elite's, and it should stay.

While people dont tend to name their cars they do tend to name their aircraft and their is a long history of pilots and company's giving their aircraft names. Some names aircraft names are more famous than the aircraft like the Enola Gay, Gimli Glider, Spirit of st Louis, I could go on.

Sure, my Mercedes is called 'green' (because it is green!), but it is still a Merc, and it is branded as such on the front (via a logo) and on the back. I got the impression the OP was not talking about the 'green' part, but the Merc part to rename. So an Adder becomes XYZ (in place of being an Adder), or an ASP becomes Pink Unicorn (in place of being an ASP).

If he was purely talking about naming his ASP 'Alfie' (so it would still be branded an ASP class ship with the name Alfie), then sure i got no problem with that, but history and tradition for manufacture type of ship is quite important in being able to judge the threat level of the ships around you, and no one goes to remove the logo of their Ferrari's do they (well kids might try to steal the badge i suppose)?

We're going to make a new Starwars film. Let's get rid of all those X-wing fighters and Millennium Falcons and add some Jar-Jar Binks.

You're that guy.

Think about that.

Jar-Jar Binks.

Your fault.
