Wild dino captures are a fun part of the DFW campaign and chaos theory mode, as scouting out dinosaurs to introduce to your park would bring a level of randomness that would have you build parks based on availability rather than planning out your research to acquire desirable star attractions. It is also thematically appropriate to the new setting of Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom and Dominion now that dinosaurs are out in the wild.
Which is something I want to point out, as wild dinosaur captures from what I have experienced in the current build of sandbox mode are very underwhelming, and leave a lot to be desired.
Not too long ago, the game was updated to have wild dinosaurs be a part of sandbox mode, where every now and then, a species of dinosaur would pop up on the expedition map for the player to capture within a limited timeframe. As fun as it is, it very rarely happens during my experience in sandbox mode, with no means to modify the rate of these dinosaurs popping onto the expedition map to provide an experience similar to campaign mode, as it is more akin to challenge mode where wild dinosaurs are treated as more of an event than a dependable source.
This makes sandbox maps such as a DFW park feel off at times, as like the DFW in the main campaign, I would rather capture many dinosaurs in the wild instead of incubating them from a lab.
As such, I want to propose in this thread the ability for players to be able to customize the wild dinosaur wrangling experience, by setting the rate of the wild dinosaurs being spotted, as well as what species of dinosaur is to pop up in the wild. For that to work, I want to start off with:
HAVE THE DINO CAPTURE MAP BE SEPARATE FROM THE FOSSIL EXPEDITION MAP
One thing I can not help but notice is that the expedition map would be really cluttered if both dig sites and wild dinosaurs were viewable at the same time, which is usually why you would only see either a game mode with only dig sites or only dino sightings. The former would have the special event of a single dinosaur sighting at a time either in challenge or sandbox mode.
To make it easier for the player, the expedition map could toggle between showing only dig sites or only dinosaur sightings. That way, players could do their fossil excavations, but toggle to view what wild dinosaurs are available at that moment.
The Expeditions and Fossils sandbox setting would then become the Expeditions sandbox setting, where the options are:
• None
• Fossils only
• Fossils and Dino sightings
• Dino sightings only
What set you choose would then determine if you only see fossils, dinosaur sightings, toggle between the two, or do not view the map at all.
The next two sandbox settings would be available if you choose to have dino sightings enabled.
WILD DINOSAUR FREQUENCY
Simply put, how common are these dinosaur sightings?
The more common they are, the more options you have, while a lower setting would make each inclusion a careful one to consider, you have:
• Rare
• Often
• Common
• Very common
This is helpful if you want to turn wild dinosaurs into a primary source of prehistoric species, or a bonus to observe every now and then to see what is available to capture.
WILD DINOSAUR ROSTER
This basically determines what dinosaurs you are likely to see be spotted in the wild. In which you have 4 rosters to choose from:
• Default Roster
• Dominion Roster
• DFW Roster
• Isla Sorna (Jurassic Park Roster)
DEFAULT AND DOMINION ROSTER
Setting the roster to either Default or Dominion would have the dinosaurs appear worldwide. Default would have all dinosaurs and skins in the game have a chance to be sighted, whereas the Dominion option would have a more limited but canonical dinosaur roster from the Dominion and Fallen kingdom movies. Sightings would be anywhere in the world and it is more likely to find marine creatures out in the ocean with either option.
Either option is great if you want to forgo the incubation lab and role-play a park that is built in the aftermath of Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom.
DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE ROSTER
This one is more familiar to players who played the campaign and chaos theory game modes that involve the DFW. The dinosaurs here are only ever located in North America, where the roster of dinosaurs is tamer in comparison to the Dominion or Default option.
And like the option's name would suggest, this is perfect for players wanting to role-play the DFW parks in a manner similar to the campaign mode.
ISLA SORNA (JURASSIC PARK ROSTER)
This option is very unique in that your source of wild dinosaurs is exclusively from the Isla Sorna map. As the main island where the dinosaurs are first introduced in both books and movies, Isla Sorna is purely focused on delivering a roster that is retro, where you are likely to find dinosaurs from before the Jurassic World Movies, and more likely to get said dinosaurs in their 1993, 1997, or 2001 skins.
I think this would be loads of fun to play with, as you could have a park that could role-play many scenarios. It could be the Sand Diego park but with the dinosaurs you choose to capture, or the very start of Jurassic World where you source any surviving species or even a Biosyn Map where you could steal Ingen's surviving roster of dinosaurs to boost your park as you see fit.
---------------------
I really hope the dino capture gameplay could be expanded on in sandbox mode, as I see a lot of replay potential if players have the option to source out dinosaurs from the wild like how it was handled in the campaign game. Getting wild dinosaurs in the current sandbox mode is too rare of an occurrence for it to be a reliable source of living animals, so the option to determine how often these dinosaur sightings are, as well as where these sightings are located would make wild sourced dino parks all that more exciting.
I also think that if such an inclusion could be made, it would be nice to see upgrades and staff that specialize in wild dinosaur wrangling, adding some research options and talent to expand on how players could handle wild dinosaur captures.
