Proximity mines? Anyone able to explain them?

So I was giving piracy a go to see how it's fairing at the moment.

Interdicted an Asp, which then proceeded to spam proximity mines which I simply dodged.

I didn't managed to scan them before then supercruised - I'm a pirate who looks before I shoot - so interdicted them again.

This time I hit a couple, which rendered my thusters dead (fair enough)... and then, literally within a few seconds, boom! Rebuy!

Ummm... Seems somewhat over powered?

No it's a thing, and pretty cool actually.

I run that load out myself on the trade ships, but I've never managed to hit anyone with them.

Probably a mix of Thruster Disablers, Shield Disablers and extra damage.

Shield disablers?

Just confused how we seem to be in the territory of destroying ships in seconds with mines?

We're not looking at Engineers mine launchers doing insane amounts of damage are we?

ps: Keep in mind this an a fully engineered Python that got blow up literally in a few seconds...?

Thing is, it's an incredibly specialized loadout and a very difficult technique to execute. Anyone who kills you with it has earned it, no matter how expensive your ship. And now that you know about it, you'll probably never succumb to it again since it's unbelievably easy to prevent someone from laying mines directly on top of you.

Something similar happened to me a few days back. I was interdicted by a Cobra in my trading Conda (6A shields, several boosters) who dropped a number of reverbating cascade mines right in front of me. They immediately took out my shields. So these things seem to be insanely powerful. I've taken carry minelaunchers in my trade ships, hopefully as a nasty surprise for the next interdiction. I have yet to see if it works.

They didn't lay mines on me... I was chasing after them talking to them and if that failed hatch breaking them... They simply drop mines which blew me apart in a few seconds :(

I can understand the premise of rebooting FSDs so as to get away, but destroying an entire ship in a couple of seconds? :(

I've completely screwed up the outfitting of all my ships. :D I really should have watched one of these videos before, lol.

Neil, try find space for a point defence on a forward Util point. That should take care of the mines.

They are engineered and are called ION disruptors (Does your thrusters) and Reverberating Cascade (This beauty does your shield Gen in!) Both are special Effects on Engineered Mines.

When i am pirating and in a ship where i can;t fit a Point Defence, i do a 90 degree turn and leave the area!

I'm guessing that a few things happened in sequence.

1) You were chasing the target in approximately a straight line
2) The target spammed a slew of mines
3) You hit a mine with Ion Disruptor: you engines shut off
4) You coasted into all the other mines, some of which had reverb cascade. Your shields died.
5) You coasted through all the remaining mines that chewed up your hull.

What were you flying? Shield tanks with lightweight hulls won't survive this tactic easily.

It's possible, though difficult, to incorporate reverb mines into a combat build.

Almost certainly that's what happened. Given the amount the mines the Asp spammed, TBH, I though, well surely they're out of ammo now? Clearly more spammage was available to them though...

I was in an Engineered Python...

A single point defense can cope with mine spammage?

I have no issue with them rebooting thrusters etc. Or even dropping shields. It's just how they then destroyed my ship in seconds. Just seems a bit exploitive? As if their effects shouldn't be cumulative etc?

Given there'd already been bouts of loads of them being dropped before hand, so clearly ammunition of them is not an issue either?

Hmm. I haven't used an Asp for laying mines, but I imagine the 4 C1 hardpoints are well placed for it. Each C1 mine could hold ~36 mines and they fire relatively quickly. The C2 mines have twice the ammo count and a magazine of 3, but the C2 hardpoints aren't placed well for it on the Asp. In a lot of ways, reverb mines are more powerful than reverb torps.

I doubt this tactic will catch you again. It's a sneaky trick that you'll look out for now.

Damn, this makes me want to run mines on my T-9 again. Right now I'm using torps and turrets.

Mines have very low integrity, so a PDT can chew through them quickly.

2 would be better, but one should stop you getting to the rebuy screen and clear enough of a path for you to get through and make the decision either to proceed with the Pirating or look for another target.

You mean the person you were attacking was... dragging mines?

No, they aren't insanely powerful.

They likely used a mix of reverb cascade and ion disruptor mines, destroy shields and then your ships powered off, mines deal heavy damage it's good fun dropping them on the ships landed in planets as they act like bombs

Ok that's a new one by me. Mines actually useful against a tailing attacker? Now I'm *really* confused.
