PS3 controller configuration?

Hi – new commander here, signed up for the beta.

I have fond memories of the original beeb Elite but no wish to continue my space trading career with keyboard controls. Down the line I might look into a flightstick but for now I'm trying with a PS3 controller... and rapidly running out of buttons to bind things to! Is anyone else playing on a PS3 controller and would like to share their configuration tips?

Here's what I tried so far:

• pitch and roll on the right stick
• throttle on L2/R2
• fire on R1/L1
• lateral and vertical thrusters on the left stick (though I wondered about ditching those and using it for looking-around).
• toggle flight assist on L3

• energy Distribution on the D-pad (4 ways)
• Triangle for Targeting (alliteration, see?)

So now I have only three buttons left (triangle, square, circle) and I need to configure them to access all the instrument panels, switch modules, request docking, etc, and no idea how to do it.

Any advice?

(Sorry if there are already threads on this. The forum search makes it hard to search for "ps3"!)

Welcome Commander!

Try selecting control pad with yaw (default options) and adjust accordingly to suit your style by play-testing with the combat scenarios. The ps3 and 360 pads have similar button configuration therefore the ps3 pad should mimic just fine. Thank you for supporting Elite.

Take care and Elite!

I use a PS4 controller which has 3 extra buttons but

I go for pitch on right stick
roll on left stick.

horizontal thrust, right stick
vertical thrust left stick.

This gives much better maneuverability imo once you get the hang of it.

Left stick click - FAon/off
Right stick click - boost

Fire R1-R2
Energy dis - dpad

x - accelerate
Square - Break
Triangle target

Then you could have L1 left panel, R1 right panel.
The dpad will also select options.

Then you could have circle for reverse.
And you can use the PS button for pause.

Looking around might be a luxury we cant afford unless we have a mouse and keyboard handy

I've got pitch and roll on right stick
Thrusters on right stick.
L3 toggles look mode and right stick looks around.
Dpad for power
Throttle and fire same as OP.
Triangle to target as well
Square to boost
X for most important hostile.
Circle for UI mode. Dpad then works in menus. L1 R1 move tabs in menus. X selects.

It a basically the default xbox setup with throttle and fire buttons switched.

Yeah, in the end its what you feel most comfortable with, trial and error. The full game might throw up different scenarios.

Ideally though I want to be able to sit back, and not have to hunch over a keyboard. I imagine this is a game I will have 8+ solid hour sessions on, I want to be as comfortable as possible. I might want to play on the big screen sometimes too.

I like some of the ideas in Iains post, so I might try a mix and match sort of thing.

It would be nice if you could use the PS4s touch pad functionality, maybe for looking around or something, it would be ideal, but it doesnt seem possible, although I'm not certain and maybe it will in the future.

Oh, and welcome to the forums :)
