PS4 -> PC -> Odyssey

I transferred from PS4 to PC and now want to buy Odyssey. The problem is when I try to purchase Odyssey on Steam, it says I must first purchase Elite. Is there a work around?

My cousin just did this process when I bought him odyssey as a gift on steam. I didn’t do it so I don’t have the details, but he had to contact FDev I believe and request that his account be migrated over

I don't mind buying the base game again, but if I reinstall won't it delete all my saved progress?
It's an online game, all your progress is on Amazon Web Servers somewhere. It is linked to whatever email you use to login though. Wouldn't think you'd need to buy again unless there is an issue with your base game and the expansion being on different game hosting platforms.

Some stuff covered in this thread

@OP, why do you need to buy the DLC specifically on Steam? Can you not buy it directly from Frontier?

Having to buy something you already have because you had already paid for it once sounds crazy.

The free copy of ED that you get for PC via the transfer portal is from Frontier's online store. Its not linked in any way to Steam.
You can buy Odyssey on Frontier's store and expand your copy that way, or you can buy both again on Steam. But why pay for the base game again?

I am also a PS4 > PC > Odyssey player. Unfortunately you will need to buy the Elite Dangerous Base game as well as the Odyssey Upgrade (DLC).
Careful OP, lots of people lying to you today

Journals and visited star data are of course kept on the local PC, but if you are coming from console that won't affect you since you can't save journals and visited star data from console, but a thing to keep in mind if you every buy a new PC and install ED on it.

Frontier gives you a free copy of the base game with the transfer. The easiest (and least problematic) option is to just buy Odyssey directly from Frontier. Once that's done, install the game and play. Steam is a great platform for many games. ED is not one of them.

You might be able to use your free Frontier base game with Steam, then buy Odyssey through Steam. Complicated problems should be expected with a complicated mess like that.

I didn't see it for sale on the Frontier website. If that option was available that would be great!

Thanks, I will check out the Frontier website again to see if it's for sale.

Success! I was able to purchase Odyssey from the Frontier website. Thank you, commanders! On last question, if in the future, I upgrade my PC how would I transfer my game to the new machine?

Go back to the Frontier store, login and go to My Downloadable Products, where you should find a link to download the game launcher (which, when installed, will install the game).

Don't forget to copy bindings, journal files, and the visited stars cache when moving to a new PC.

Thanks, Robert. When I login and go to My Downloadable products I see the purchase of Odyssey from today. Do the bindings and journal files contain the player stats that I have accumulated already?

The bindings files contain your controller/HOTAS/mouse/keyboard/etc settings.

The journal files are a record of YOUR game journey. (Fun fact, you can upload/import journal files into https://edastro.com/galmap/ in the upper left-hand corner of the page to see everywhere you went in that file on a map.)

All of your stats (Basically ED Your Player Account) are kept on the servers and contain the data for exactly one commander and any in game or web store cosmetics purchases you've made using ARX as well as any cosmetics you've been awarded by FDev either in game or as contest prizes (IE: Stellar Screenshots) or earned as Twitch Drops. There's probably some other stuff in there as well...but none of your commander's save data is kept on your PC/PS4/XBOX; its all stored in the cloud...

Well, I thought Odyssey was working but I don't seem to be able to disembark from my ship at a station. Is the launcher screen supposed to have an Odyssey option? An image of my launcher screen is shown below.

When you bought Odyssey, were you logged in to the store using teh same login details that you are iusing for the copy of the game that Frontier provided when you migrated your CMDR to PC?
