PS4 Pro Supersampling and Elite Dangerous

Update 5.50 is out today, and it brings supersampling to the PS4 Pro. Since ED doesn't support 4K, it sounds like we won't be able to take advantage of this new feature, but as I said elsewhere, the proof is in the pudding. So Pro users, have you tried this new feature and does it make any difference at all for Elite Dangerous?

Sadly, nope and nope, Elite Dangerous on PS4 does not support any resolution above 1080p. We talked a bit about this on the 4K/pitchfork mega threadnought.

Unfortunately until (or if it ever does) Elite Dangerous supports higher than 1080p on the PS4 Pro this wont be a benefit to anyone. (see https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...-Pitchforks!?p=6404540&viewfull=1#post6404540)

This feature is mainly aimed at people who own 1080p TVs but want to run the 4K modes of the enhanced games supersampled when they don't already have supersampling set up by the developer (HZD is an example which handles SS itself in game, and Rocket League is one that doesn't and will benefit by the new firmware, the key difference is both those games have 4K modes).

Digital Foundry did a quick video about it. (see https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...-Pitchforks!?p=6404865&viewfull=1#post6404865)

I know you talked about it, but have you actually tried it? I myself fit in the "I'm keeping my 1080p screen and so this makes the Pro interesting to me" camp, thus why I ask. That and the fact that ED could seriously use some AA help, which this would provide.

Anyway, try it and get back to me, and I'll be happy. That's science - testing the hypothesis and publishing the conclusion :D

I trust digital foundry. I wouldn't even be able to do an analysis like them, the Rocket League section is very good. That video tells me pretty much all I need to know.

For Elite Dangerous it makes no difference whatsoever as it doesn't support greater than 1080p resolution so 1080p is all you get no matter what*.

(*The PS4 is actually upscaling to 4K but I don't notice a difference between my 4K TV or my 1080p monitor with Elite Dangerous personally apart from the technical difference of the screens, my TV is better generally than my monitor, has better blacks, better contrast etc etc nothing to do with the PS4 though).

Interesting video!

I have a PS4 Pro but only a standard 1080p TV albeit a high quality one with low lag. I bought my Pro for my PSVR as it greatly improves the visuals over the standard system. But I haven’t felt the need to invest in a new 4K TV. With HDR coming out as well and 8K on the horizon I will probably just wait until the PS5 comes out in a couple of years and get one then, or 8K, whatever it supports. I will probably take advantage of the new Supersampling option though. Seems like it’s worth it.

It's a bit confusing because when you start ED you get a pop up saying supersampling mode enabled. At least you did in the 5.5 beta, don't know about the release version.

Hmm interesting. Does the picture look any different? I am happy to be proved utterly wrong on this one.

Is supersampling enabled on all games regardless of their native resolution? I guess I will do some testing later changing resolution of the console between 1080p and 2160p output.

Once thing I have always noticed if I have the console set to 2160p all my screenshots are taken at 3840x2160 but they actually appear to be a bit worse in quality than at 1080p which doesn't make any sense, they look "fuzzy". So maybe there is some weird internal jiggery-pokery going on.

It certainly doesn't look like native 2160p when my PS4 is outputting at 3840x2160 and FDev has always said "1080p" only. So no idea. I think FDev would have said if we were actually getting 2160p. :)

I wish there was more PS4 Pro support for 1080p displays in general sure the extra clarity that SS can offer is nice but in real gameplay its rarely noticeable, I'd much prefer that umph be used to push towards 1080p 60fps or to put the graphics sliders up to ultra.

For ED I personally love "Quality" graphics option as an explorer but if i played more combat I would opt for "Performance"

Ive opted to not use the Ps4s new SS mode as it offers no notable improvements (In my personal opinion)
and makes FPS fluctuate more in games that it try's to improve.
To be fair on sony though I really like the "boost" option They implemented during the last big update

The boost function is nice, but doesn't support any games that already have a pro mode (which is required by all new games released since the pro is on the market).

I didn't see a difference with supersampling on in ED, but my PS4 Pro has just decided to die which is suspicious since I just enabled supersampling yesterday.

Died? Completely? I enabled it to try and noticed no improvement in graphics on my 1080p screen (obviously it would not allow me to enable it when at 4K). I then seemed to have a worse frame rate and I had two new crashes with a different new error code.

I then used maintenance mode to rebuild the database and seems to have been a bit better since then.

It's probably just coincidence that it happened right the next day after turning on supersampling. All I get now is a never ending blinking blue light, which seems to indicate the main CPU/GPU doesn't boot, which the internet tells me probably means a bad solder joint. I can't even boot in maintenance mode.

The pro in general makes the game look better though, at least in quality mode. So since you were ready to buy one for a slight res increase, why not for the graphical improvements?

Oh I've been tempted, believe you me, especially considering some of the graphic glitches (cough shadows cough) on the PS4 Slim. I'm patiently waiting to see if they make a Slim PS4 Pro and perhaps drop the price. There's precedent for this, as something similar happened with the PS3.

Then again, Nemo says PS5 is coming out this Christmas :p

But the PS3 didn't have a pro model, so there is no precedence regarding a pro slim version. But I guess the probability isn't that low. Yeah, PS5 this Christmas, sure :p Would say late 2020 or 2021. And then who knows when FDev will release a PS5 version - probably at least a year or two into the new generation.

If you want to enjoy the benefits of the pro version, I would do it rather earlier than later, as there isn't anything to wait for in the next 3 to 4 years (except a potential pro slim model, which will run the game the same as the current pro model).

I was thinking of the Slim and the new Slim (PS3). There's a reason I prefer Slims, much of it has to do with power consumption, which I have to watch very carefully. Anyway, I'll buy what I buy when I buy it ;)

It does say "Supersampling enabled" when the game starts. I know it shouldn't actually do anything as Elite doesn't support 4k on ps4 pro but, coincidently, there have been NO GRAPHICAL GLITCHES at all since the 5.50 update. I know this has nothing to do with supersampling but could be a welcome side effect or just a coincidence.

I've got graphical glitches coming out the wazoo since update 3.02.... I'll be filing let another bug report today :(
