PS4 to get physical disk release

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articl...ngerous-and-planet-coaster-at-physical-retail

UK games specialist Frontier Developments will release its two self-published games at boxed retail.
The company has stepped away from work-for-hire projects in recent years and has moved to publishing its own IP. The first two games being Elite: Dangerous (2014) and Planet Coaster (2016).
Now the studio has teamed up with Sold Out to get the games out at physical.

Not till after the digital version, but I might get both to show support (if they have VR).

First time I checked the news today, and it just popped up.

Also it has Horizons:

Alongside Planet Coaster, Frontier and Sold Out will release Elite Dangerous: Legendary Edition later in 2017 for PS4 and Xbox One. The game will also feature the Horizons expansion and 1,000 Frontier points.

Frontier really knows how to grind my gears. FAQ states digital only on PSN. Q&A session confirm yes PSN.

I stupidly believed the developer and put money in my PSN account. Now a disk version (which I'd much prefer) is announced.

Thanks FDev, really...

You can use PSN $$ for a nice new paint job :)

Seems the digital version would be better for consoles. The disc would no doubt have to be inserted each time one wanted to play on the PS4. Would also be outdated with the next update. If course no problem if that is the only game ever played on it! :)

I've given it to Sony in fairness. FDev have nothing from me. Lesson learned. Respect for FDev lost.

Would you be willing to wait month's longer for the Disc version of Elite Dangerous? I know your pain I buy all my games on Disc unless they are Digital only. FD has already stated a disc version would come at some point. This is not really new news, but it wont be at launch. Wolfenstein the Old Blood was done the same. I learned early about it and waited 2 months after release for the Disc version to come out. PC version of Elite Dangerous was the same Digital first. While I have thought of buying the PC disc many times I still have not.

You put money into your account for a game that doesn't even have a release date yet, just a window? You're not allowed to complain.

Yeh, thanks for the more understanding tone. Its appreciated. Apparently I can't complain about things I am not happy with. I guess we will see when the launch dates are finally revealed.

You decided to put money into a project that has not had any details released yet and it's Frontiers fault?

Riiiiiight...

Why does everyone want a physical disk, anyway? They add slightly to the load time (especially when it's not already inserted into the console), you'll still need to download a large patch sooner or later, and if you lose or damage it, it's gone.

The one advantage physical media has over digital download is resale / rebuy. I don't think that describes any of us.

Sometimes I like to stare at the business end of a game disc and just go

There is a whole other world of fun in there...

Most people don't these days. I can't remember the source but I read something the other day that said that most sales of games these days are digital downloads. However I can understand that some people still want the disk; if you're not tech savvy and are buying it for someone else then you just want to go into the shop and buy it. Heck, I work in IT and have been talking to a colleague for months about ED (he's a PC gamer) and he kept saying he was going to go and buy it. I kept saying, "Dude I am pretty sure it's digital only, just buy it on Steam" but he insisted he wanted a disc.
