PS5 revealed

Here's mud in your eye!

Not really. I'm glad there is going to be an option with a Bluray drive.

I'll be buying the digital edition though, because I already have a 4K Bluray player, and playing games loaded from disc... sucks. :(

If you really want an all-in-one media centre though, the best option IMO is still to build one yourself out of PC parts. 🤷‍♀️

I remember the time where for a couple of years, playstation was the cheapest bluray player on the market and many people bought PS3 just to watch movies on it.
But yeah, we're way past the compact disk (of any kind) gaming and fast SSD being one of the key selling points of the new consoles, games on anything rotary don't make sense except for collectors.

Of course it is - but with some experience to back it up.

You just have more control over what you put into it, all the way down to open source software that you can control. So you're not at the mercy of what corporations decide to put in (or more likely) take out.

Usually cheaper too. I bet I could build you a media centre that fulfilled all your needs for less than 300 quid. 🤷‍♀️

I think going either digital or physical has their merits.

When it comes to digital, it is awfully sweet having the ability to play anything you want as fast as possible and not need to worry of the extra space outside the system to hold your games and to put the games in and get it to work from the media reader.

But physical media is also amazing to have as it is literally something you could hold on to and know that it is yours. Especially if you held on to it for so long, where after so many years, you could go to where you stored the games, hold that old game on your hand, plop it right in, and enjoy that game. I guess it is like music, for sure you could enjoy music from a digital service no problem in the highest quality possible, but holding onto records, CDs and cassette tapes is like an appreciation to the media and get to experience that media as is was made to be experienced.

I just think that the PS5 could be the last one we could enjoy both in the large scale and get ready to jump into a more digital market in the future. It is the more convenient and less costly option, but it does definitely make physical media a more luxurious and appreciative option in the future.

To me, that is redundant in today's games world.

For example: I bought a PS4 Pro specifically to play RDR2, and the pack I bought came with the game on disc. After installing said game onto the internal hard drive in order to play it, the next thing it did after that was download a 50GB patch. The disc was then basically redundant - and the only reason not to turn it into a frisbee was that it needed to check the disc existed before launching the game.

That's just an annoyance and not a convenience in any way IMO.

I couldn't take that disc along with my saved games, and install it on another PS4 without a network connection, and use the same saved games. They wouldn't load.

I do hope the PSN on the PS5 would allow players to use some of the older games we purchased since the PS3 era. Like some games are understandable as running ps3 games is difficult due to the hardware, but since there is a great PS3 emulator already made, I would love it if an update would eventually come later on where a PS3 emulator that is optimised for the PS5 specs could be released. I have so many games for the PS3, most of which even include PS2 and PS1 classics and collections. Would very much like to try those games out on the same console. Even though PS4 games are currently the only games to be backwards compatible, I would not throw the possibility of previous generations outside the window. I would especially love to load and play old PS1 games as a testament to see how far we have come, and Crash bandicoot 2 is my jam and I want to get those crystals!

I think that's what PS Now is for. At least from Sony's POV. 🤷‍♀️

Yeah but PS Now is heavily focused on streaming the games. I do like the availability and netflix like approach of PS Now as it will be great for newcomers to playstation, but I would rather run games natively to reduce any stream related chugging, and make use of of the library I garnered over the years :/

I don't disagree - I'm just saying that its existence means they're probably not going to bother so much with an actual emulator. Maybe being overly cynical though. 🤷‍♀️
