Newcomer / Intro PS5 vs Xbox series X

Hi all,

I used to play Frontier and have finally got around to wanting to play Elite Dangerous. I do not want to get a PC so was wondering what opinions are between PS5 and Xbox series X versions? I note the xbox currently has seemingly better 4k graphics for example but will they sort out that on the PS5 soon perhaps?

Cheers!

They both play in backward compatability mode and they seem to have no plans to upgrade to Native NextGen, so you might be better to focus on what addons you might want to use like Hotas or VR.

You can play on the new consoles just fine, but there's no special updates or features intended for them that I've heard of. We will see many graphical improvements come Odyssey's launch, but everybody is getting those. Hopefully 4k support in PS5 will come with it, but knowing Sony... I have my doubts.

Though I feel the console experience of Elite is very sub-par, you would likely be better off on the Series X than a PS5 if you're after the crisp 4k resolution. You still get access to a HOTAS but you get no VR (Not PSVR compatible anyways if you went with the PS5), no Voice Attack (voice-activated macros), and very limited Third-Party Tool support- which is pretty darn necessary with how hard it is to locate certain things from the tools provided in-game. You can use the important ones like EDDB or INARA though, which is more than enough for many players if you don't mind the lack of VR or 3rd Party apps.

Other than that, the game is wonderful no matter what platform you play on. Just note there is no cross-platform compatibility outside of the Fleet Carriers.

Best of luck on your decision, and welcome back to the black Commander!

ED supported 4k on Xbox One X, and I can say that it does run and look quite a bit better than the one or one s. It is a bit meh on the One S (which I also play on). I also play on PC, and PC is definitely better than Xbox one/S, but pretty similar to Xbox One X (but one X is 4k and PC is 2k). I am getting a series X to play on... 4k with a nice OLED TV that supports freesync, gsync, auto low latency, variable refresh rate, hdmi 2.1 for 4k 120 and I think Xbox Series X will be better than PC, but I won't know for another month. =)
