PSA - Are you playing too much?

Timely story in the New York Times about hard-core gamers. I've seen some of the Elite streams that seem to be on 24/7 (obviously they're not 24/7, but some folks do play many hours straight). Take care of yourself first.

If live streaming is your job, treat it as a job: 8/24 unless extreme circumstances demand otherwise. Its not a cause of death though in and of itself. IK once had a 72-hour music recording session with no sleep at all. Results were very interesting to say the least. :p

Take regular breaks get up walk around get a drink of water, eat decent food not junk food.

Common sense people.

No cause of death determined. Didn't even die while actually playing video games. Story from an old media source which has a vested interest in raising hysteria against new media. Seems legit.

Everything can be unhealthy if done without reason.

Water's essential and pretty harmless, but if you drink 15 litres, you'll die. If someone did it, he'd be called an idiot and nobody would blame the water.
I don't see why excessive gaming leading to medical issues or death should be treated differently.

I'd wager that most of us gamers are in poor physical condition (sitting lifestyle, no exercise, fat, low stamina, unhealthy diet etc.), and would have been dead if faced with a situation requiring prolonged exercise. That's why I don't do running for example, especially marathons :p Oh, and the subject of this article was also a smoker. Not exactly healthy.

That said I'm after a 10hrs straight playthrough of Mass Effect Andromeda trial, started playing in the evening, finished in the morning, slept ~4hrs and am now feeling we...

...AAAAARRRGHHHHhhhhhhh X_X

just kidding, still feeling well :) and the playthrough was 9h45m, the rest checks out :p

Hmmm...Retired so play 14 hr, sleep 4, play another 3, sleep 3, repeat. SyFy channel on the TV in the background. Play with the dogs during breaks. Cruising with no rush thus peaceful and relaxing in-game. Irritating and frustrating wading through I hate ED/FD posts on the Forum while hyper jumping to the next system. I'll probably live to 90 playing the game and die of heart failure within the year reading the Forum posts! :)

When I was unemployed I played World of Warcraft for 15 hours straight, 5 days a week. Now when I have a daughter, a job, and a house to take care of, I usually play 2 hours tops each day. I think it's a fair amount of time to spend on games considering people spend more time watching crap television.

I wish I had the time to damage myself by playing too much :(

4 years ago I would play 40-50 hours a week.

Now I hav a wife & 2 kids... I get 6-8 hours a week...

So I would say the opposite, those of you who can play a lot, enjoy that time while you can!
