PSA: Be Careful When You Alt-Tab

First off, apologies if this is in the wrong place but it felt like the best place to share.

Basically the topic of this thread is in the title and a warning to newbies. It may be tempting to alt-tab to youtube or facebook (I blame my girlfriend) while you jump from system to system.

But resist the urge. Check your throttle before you do it. I have felt the pain. My Cobra, with a full cargo of Gold, decided to headbutt Cleve Hub in Eravate while I replied to a message. The insurance cost was no issue, it was the cargo. Now I'm back at 300k cr, all because I thought it would be a good idea to drop out of supercruise and immediately alt-tab.


So the moral of the story is to throttle to zero before you alt tab. Don't make the same mistake like I did and invalidate 4 hours worth of trading.

Be careful doing even that. Setting the throttle to zero won't stop hostiles from shooting at you.

Also watch out when you alt+tab while in Supercruise. Granted, the danger of crashing into anything while traveling at 30km/s (minimum speed) is dismal at best, but you can still be interdicted. And being attacked by pirates when you're not able to respond is... quite not profitable.

Heck, even Yahtzee from Zero Punctuation had a funny tale with out-tabbing. He plays while listening to podcasts, so when one of them finished, he alt-tabbed the game to set up the next one to play. Then he crashed into a sun.

I've done the same thing. Except I alt+tabbed back exactly one second before impact and got to see all the fiery goodness just as it happened. No cargo hold full of gold though.

Fly a Cobra (stock shields) at full throttle into the side of the station. Tell me about your resulting EVA.

Yup. Now if only we could surf the web from our INFO window in game then we could Hulu/Prime/Netflix/YT/ with our feet are up on the dash, bag of chips in our lap & drink in a cup holder! Travel slacker style!

Those not playing in 3D or GSync or Freesync(?) will probably prefer Borderless Fullscreen. Alt-tabbing is perfectly safe and way easier.
edit: does Oculus Rift support borderless fullscreen?

Maridal has 3 pretty good res sites, though they can be dark. If you play GMT look out for an anaconda named Hell Razor, the dude helps newbies get on their feet

Leave your sound on and don't point at anything solid and you are usually fine.

alt tabbing will also result in MASSIVE sound pops/crackling when you alt tab back into the game, needing a restart to fix it...so avoid it if you can
