PSA: Contrary to popular belief, Open isn't full of griefers and quasi-social nutjobs

It can happen, sure- but it's not like it's all and everything that happens. In my 5 months of active playing, I've only been griefed once. Once. The never-ending threads of a frustrated minority do not speak for the rest.

In fact, there actually aren't that many pirates either. Unless you're actively seeking out the experience in Lave, Leesti and similar systems- being interdicted by a Pirate is a rare occurrence. (edit: Which, of course, is not to say that Pirates are to be put into the same category as griefers. It's a genuine play-style.)

Talk to us. Ask us to join your wing. Ask for an escort. If you're a new player, don't be afraid to play open.

Edit: Forgot to mention: The first time I was griefed, I managed to round up a wing of random people at the station I 'respawned' at. We subsequently hunted him down and shared the bounty. Amazing experience.

same here.

as a convinced solo player i try open once in a while. not beeing griefed till now. have not been to leesti/lave, but sol and many not-so-populars were peaceful.

I've been playing open since day 1 of the beta and i dont remember ever getting grieffed or picked on. really dont understand why people seem to be afraid of open play.

130 hours of play in open, interdicted twice by pirates. I'm 40 light years from the starting system, so you don't have to go far.

I find all those threads most confusing. There's 400 billion stars. Just MOVE!

(Star Citizen - there's just 200 stars IIRC)

I've been playing since premium beta and in all that time I've been attacked by a player once.

It happened a couple of months ago. I reset my save and restarted from Trevithick Dock, bought some cargo, launched, and when I left the starting system (I was only jumping through to go to a neighbouring system) someone in a Cobra interdicted me before I could jump to the next system and blew my poor Sidey to bits... These days, if I see a player coming a bit too close in SC (which is very rare), I drop out and re-jump again. Usually they're eithere gone due to the matchmaking or they've headed off after someone else.

Your chances of being griefed are inversely proportional to your desire to PvP.

They are directly proportional to your paranoia about griefers.

Agree. I play since 5 mths also, almost every day, sometimes 1-2 hours, sometimes the whole day (night) - depending on my job. I've not been griefed until a few days ago. To be more precise, it was just a try to grief me, it didn't work out. I escaped, though I was completely unarmed on my trip to Sgr A*.
I've been pirated a few times. Mostly I managed it to escape, have been destroyed while trying maybe... like three times... maybe four. Why? Because I never ever were flying a trader without taking care, that my outfitting gives me a good chance to escape and I was all time aware of, that somewhere on my route some players just wait for a T7 or similar to attack it (doesn't matter if just for the fun of killing or to get it's cargo). So I took actions to avoid it. That's part of the game.
The bounty system is far from perfect... yeah... but it is like it is and if it get's better with the next update only time will show. Piracy isn't that easy and lucrative like most of the victims whine about. You get fined already judt for the try to interdict somebody. If he escapes you take damage and have a bounty added on you, without firing a single shot. And griefing... well... what do you think "anarchy" means? Google it...

Plan your trips in advance, outfit your ships the smart way, join wings,... yeah or simply do not trade and try to make your credits other way.

I began in solo & mobius because I was, to be frank, afraid of getting clubbed over and over. However, I switched to open - and exclusively open - after a few weeks. It was not a case of having become much better, or massively upgrading. I was in an Adder iirc. I simply felt I was not giving myself a chance to meet other people, and judge for my self. I have never been interdicted by a Cmdr, or attacked, or rammed. And I've made a few friends too. So I would say there is nothing to fear once you realise the trouble spots. Although there is always that chance of a bad experience, that actually adds an edge for me.

New players be advised. The forums are - like every game forum ever - largely populated by people who are having a bad time. At that specific moment. Everyone saying they're getting griefed to oblivion does not translate as everyone playing in Open.

I fly all my ships - including my Type 7 - in open, and I rarely get trouble unless I go out looking for it (siding with the wrong side in a combat zone, for example, normally doesn't end well)

I've also taken to a policy of 10% and disengage. If I get into combat, and the opponent starts to run away, I'll knock their hull to 10% (so it's an expensive repair bill and they know they've had a slappin') and then let them escape rather than destroy them altogether. Particularly if they've only got a 400cr bounty or something. They don't get hit with crippling insurance and ragequit, I still get the satisfaction of winning :D

's true you know! People rarely start threads saying "I just docked at Witchhaul and everything went great. A CMDR chatted to me about the local rares stations and I bought a nice Laser to cheer myself up." The nature of human nature. We even complain about nice weather sometimes. Have a Solero...

Aye a couple of nights back I was tootling around and a CMDR in a Cobra pinged local to ask incredulously "Wow, a real player in an Anaconda?" (Yes, I know, yay me for having the time to get the cash to get the big ship...). We chatted for a while about whether the ship was worth it and how long it took to get it. That was the only human interaction in the whole of last week, 20LY away from Sol on the way out to 78 Ursae Majoris.

1200 hours in open since launch, never been griefed. While I'm sure it happens it is not as wide spread issue as one might gather from the forum threads.

I've only been playing for a couple of weeks - and all of my time has been in open.

You can count me as one of those who expected to be set upon by real players. So far I've only been interdicted by NPCs and my only comms interaction with a real player has been while we were both waiting for a landing slot to open up at an outpost. I'm sure some will jump on me at some point - but I've at least played long enough now to know that "bad" experiences are a thing that rarely happens. If someone truly pirates me, however, that will be interesting. For now - I'm just not a very juicy target in my 4 cargo slot Sidey.

Yep, same here. I've been playing for a couple of months. I've been pirated by a Clipper while doing a rare run once in my Cobra. So it was on a known rares route. The good kind of pirate though. i had about 20 rares. He wanted 5 lavian brandy and I was on my way again.

Last night a Vulture tried to interdict my Clipper. As I was running a trade setup with a quite measly a3 shield, I evaded and got away. Sweaty palms though..

So got pirated (or an attempt to) twice. Griefed; never. It's pretty cool in open. Though I sometimes switch to Mobius (some more player interaction I feel) open so far has been fun.
