PSA: Contrary to popular belief, Open isn't full of griefers and quasi-social nutjobs

It can happen, sure- but it's not like it's all and everything that happens. In my 5 months of active playing, I've only been griefed once. Once. The never-ending threads of a frustrated minority do not speak for the rest.

In fact, there actually aren't that many pirates either. Unless you're actively seeking out the experience in Lave, Leesti and similar systems- being interdicted by a Pirate is a rare occurrence. (edit: Which, of course, is not to say that Pirates are to be put into the same category as griefers. It's a genuine play-style.)

Talk to us. Ask us to join your wing. Ask for an escort. If you're a new player, don't be afraid to play open.

Edit: Forgot to mention: The first time I was griefed, I managed to round up a wing of random people at the station I 'respawned' at. We subsequently hunted him down and shared the bounty. Amazing experience.

Wow, a post celebrating Open mode? Inb4 downvoted to hell and end... oh wait this isn't Reddit.

Inb4 carebear assault!

Been playing since December, never got griefed, every CMDR pirate that I've encountered was cool and let me go even when I had no cargo. The only time I got interdicted purely to PvP was when a Viper Interdicted my Eagle but I don't blame him since I was also in my PvP loadout.

Been playing for a month, mostly in open unless I'm drunk/whatever. Never had any issues with other players other than the occasional pirate (but I don't trade so that wasn't an issue either). I did skip the entire start up grind thanks to someone dropping free imperial slaves outside a station though ;D

Also, needs to be noted, this is the kind of help you can't get in Solo.

I've been dipping in and out of open, gradually increasing my time. Been a generally fun experience, plenty of people tipping their wing.

I've only ever been attacked by a player once and that was in möbius not actually in open.

Yeah, open is not that dangerous. I've yet to be pirated, griefed or randomly attacked by a player. I've done all my trading in open since I started playing Elite and it's been a wonderful and peaceful experience.

However, I was once interdicted by a Commander when heading towards a station. I was expecting it to be a pirate but nope, it turns out that the Commander accidentally hit his "interdict button" and quickly appologized for the interdiction. He also asked where he could find non-lethal weapons and I told him that high tech stations have them and that the station I was heading to is high tech.

Furthermore, trading in open makes it more interesting. I always scan players in multipurpose ships to see if it could be a pirate (I look for pirating equipment such as FSD interdictor and cargo scanner).

Worth mentioning is that I'm flying an unarmed Type 7 but still, no player has ever tried to steal my cargo.

I've also never been rammed but I've encountered many reckless pilots that cut me off when exiting/entering a station. Worst I've had was a head on collision in my Type 6, with another Type 6. No damage done though.

So yeah, open play is not full of griefers and psychos.

The worst part about open is it is running out of players. It becomes more boring by the day due to other players being scared off by lies that it is a horrible place, when it isn't.

Good Grief

I always play Open except when a CG battle is so crowded you can not get bounties at all coz player wings get em every time, you get nought. Sometimes when my internet connection is really really bad I go Solo coz that uses much less internet resource.

Otherwise Solo/Group is coward mode. I fly for weeks in between what could be a troublesome encounter.

I have needed 28 replacement ships. About 10 times due to docking computer mishaps before the docking computer seemed to care. 5 times due to minor paint scrapes turned fatal due to another since fixed bug. 5 times due to some stations not having a big enough docking slot! 5 times learning that superior pilot skill and confidence is not being enough for my basic Sidewinder to complete assassination missions. About 3 times to surprise attacks by griefers, but none recently.

If you have a rubbish ship or you are a incompetent pilot or both, you might suffer more.

I fly a bounty hunting Cobra and now whenever a commander tries to surprise attack me I just boost, boost, (silent run if needs be but usually not) and run away into the black. I do not enter Hyperspace or Supercruise, there could be interdictors waiting. I just keep flying. The bad guys give up the chase. Then most times I turn back recharged and boost flying at 440 right at them. I do not ram but close pass by them as to scare em, giving them the all laser on the way in. I keep the boost speed up, they can't catch me and they don't like it. It frustrates them and they leave.

Give me a wing of 4 fast all laser Cobra Mk3s and our combined firepower and speed could take out almost any greifer that wasn't using cheat hacks.

Been playing exclusively in open since the release, haven't lost a single ship to PvP yet.

I am very disappointed by the performance of the griefers in this game. I want my money back.

Maybe so OP. All I can say is that on my VERY FIRST trip outside of the starting station, in my unmodified Sidewinder, while exploring the system, a CMDR in an Anaconda came up to me, messaged me "Time to die noob" or some such, and blew me up.

I've played a lot (Dangerous rank) and I've never had a bad time on open. Made lots of friends, sought lots of adventure; had tons of fun! Open is really cool. Sometimes (usually when I'm tired), I do prefer the stress free solo/ group environment, when I just want to play with my ships, but to me that's not quite the real game. In open, you're in the real galaxy; anything could happen, so you better be sharp.

your absolutly bang on with that what we do have are some players who do the same routes same stations at the same time and they dont want to change there routine which frankly makes pirating and nutjobs an easy job

Yeah, the main problem is the traderoute between lave cluster and witchhaul is by far the most popular trade route, so a ton of people there.

Really needs to be more rares in one fashion or another, maybe give those stations that have a REALLY long flight distance a lot of more rares so they actually are worth the flight.
Maybe make it so that rares is something a system/station can get once it reaches a certain wealth? this would mean there would be a reason to help specific stations along?

I've always been an open player because of the challenge of the pirates (and psychos)

Only the other day I got bounced by a pirate in Lave , demanded I turn over my cargo to him..... said do you really want the alien facehugger egg I picked up at ridley scott 5 mins ago? (makes a loverly pet when they hatch, bonds instantly with children ), glad he did'nt get me on the way to picking up said egg..... had 60 tons of rares on board worth 16 000/ton

Now I'm a pilot who flies about a bit and the only real griefers I've met were the EIC with their blockade of Liaedin when I wanted to cash up some bounty hunting bonuses... yeah shoot down with no warning... cheers thanks a bunch.

Even the Lave/Altair stations have nearly always been grief free (I never said trouble free) apart from that one commander who's name has something to do with a skin condition on the chest area... but rightfully got shot down by the station when he moved too far from the old safe spot :p

Seriously people, Human Occupied Space is really big. There are lots of stars and lots of stations, and relatively not that many people. There are even far, far fewer people who get their kicks simply from popping noobs & the ill-equipped. I'm no trader, and I'm happy, willing, and able to fight ANY Greaver, Pirate, or PvP'r, no problem. So my perspective varies greatly from that of the typical T-X pilot.

For those who aren't prepared for such endeavors, you shouldn't, and don't have to be. And guess what? You can still play in Open. In real life, I would not currently walk through the streets of Ramadi, unless I was rolling deep & with enough firepower to level a few city blocks, and even that probably isn't enough. Just as in real life, I do not plan on venturing into hostile enemy territory without being properly fit.

I'm not saying every trader needs to be in an Anaconda with big teeth to make it through Diso, but if you're trying to turn huge profits on rare goods, shouldn't there be some risk outside of the consensus view of super easy NPC interdiction? I run a rare loop from my home system Hip 80242, through Lave, Leesti, Diso, down to Vega, and all the way out to Toxandji with a few stops at some other Rare's stations. I see Pirates, real Pirates not Greavers, occasionally but even they are few and far between. To be honest, I wish I ran into CODE or RoA more than I do on this route. And notice how I'm not afraid to tell everyone where my home system is, Greavers are not to be feared, they are to be pitied.

And for the folks who say "I've been grinding for sooo many hours, and HATE losing all that Cr on rebuy and Pirated goods!!" To that I say, why are you grinding, unless you enjoy the grind? Do you not enjoy the game or something? I play ED to fly a spaceship, not see how many credits I can make. I try to make Cr in real life, and it sucks, why would I do it in a game, especially if I didn't enjoy it.

Now I do agree that there should be harsher consequences for folks who murder simply for murdering. But if you're a trader, just trying to trade, please don't feel like Open is only for PvP'ing and Grief.

I've been playing since December last year and never been griefed. Mostly do trading a few jumps away from a hot spot and the only people I see are fellow traders who I salute and sometimes chat with. I've been pirated a couple of times during CG:s and it also happens if I try a really good and popular route nearby. All pirates have been friendly until I try to run (I have yet to just let them have some cargo :)). Lately I've been thinking about buying a hauler and at the end of every good trading session (+25M credits tonight as an example) fill it with alcohol and gold and travel to the hot spot near by and announce that gifts are available just to give them some incentive to continue add the extra fun and excitement to this game.

Open is best. Interesting things to see and do; you make your own fun - like the Buckyball Races! No prize, no fortune, just fun!

Pirates are rare, psychopaths are rarer still.

As always, flying without suffcient insurance will result in tears - but that happens in solo too.

Chatting is fun, getting together in a wing is fun.

Open is NOT the big scary greifer-topia that is claimed.

I never , ever met a bad person on open and every one was real nice (once even said sorry to me for hiting me in a RES)
I fly in the alioth cluster mostly
