I haven't played around much with the setting since starting to play early last year. I've mostly slid it down to zero to see how dark I could make the game, but kept at 50% most of the time. I was getting material purple smearing in dark places when playing with the DK2, and tried the settings suggested by DrRoli (sp?) in earlier posts, which didn't help - unfortunately. So on a whim today I turned gamma up to 100% to see what would happen. First thing I noticed was the texture of space - so much richer, so much depth to it. Space just looks better with higher gamma. Of course it's also brightened up a bit. On top of that, all the dark/purple smearing with the Oculus completely disappeared.
Now, I find the game too bright with gamma at 100%, so turned it down to 75%. Get a tiny amount of smearing on the DK2, but not much, and retain much of the texture of the galaxy. The game looks much better IMHO. Of course, some prefer a dark and foreboding experience - for those, gamma should be 50% or less. With gamma at 50% I needed to use ship lights when landing at ship outposts and asteroid belts; it's less necessary (but still helpful) with gamma at 75%.
Your mileage may vary - but try messing around with it if you haven't already. Takes a couple of seconds to adjust in the in-game menu.
