PSA [Mining]: Failed detonation can be recovered

After a complete foul up last night I undercharged a deep core and had to flee. The charges detonated but the rock did not blow apart so I returned and shot a full charge into the last remaining fissure.

This immediately overcharged the rock with it seeming to have resumed the detonation yield level from where the previous failed detonation left off.

The asteroid then blew apart with this single charge. In this instance because the whole rock was overcharged I got a low chunk yield. However I had I realised this upfront I could have set a lower charge and probably got an optimal yield detonation.

I'm not sure if this is widely known as I discovered this totally by accident after many, many hrs of mining.

I had the same experience, overcharged one fissue and then disarmed the charge - let the remaining charges blow, and set a new charge in the remaining fissure, which was enough to get a perfect detonation and a nice amount of void opals.

you can disarm your charges and start again ;)

each fissure also also says low/average/high which will also have an effect on the charge you set

Thanks for confirming that it's possible :)

Start again? Sort of!

After disarming it seems to me that the fissures are not reusable, i.e. you can't reset charges in them. In this particular incident I found that all the fissures were high strength so combined with high rotation and a little too much wine I undercharged the rock and ran out of time. At the end of it all there was only one usable fissure left.

This was actually the first time out of many rocks that I've stuffed it enough to fail a detonation. I've disarmed plenty of charges to bring the yield down and love how you need to consider the strength of the fissure vs the yield of the set charge.

I discovered this on my very first rock.

I figured it was common knowledge.

Common sense, maybe. :) Me too. Failed to get the charges right first time (went over, then disarmed, and didn't have enough time to set another), so first rock took two detonations to blow apart. Can still reach optimum yield on the second detonation (and if you had to disarm a single charge due to going over yield for first set, I find that usually just a single charge will get optimum yield on the second attempt). It took me three attempts to get optimum yield on a couple of asteroids, but my excuse is that I wasn't really paying attention at the time...

Yeh it seem every asteroid has a set cracking threshold and when you undercharge a detonation you just lower that threshold

What i always do is start with high charges to low strength fissures and then adjust with low charges to high strength fissures, in some cases i've been able to crack a roid with just 2 high charges to a low strength fissure or 2 high charges to a low and average strength fissure
