PSA: Never, EVER, fly without insurance.

There's been alot of threads popping up lately about how people have lost millions whether it be to bugs, not understanding game mechanics or just plain stupidity... take your pick.

BUT the one common thing in all of them is a half mention, usually a one liner in their long rant, about flying without insurance.

Well here it is - a PSA about flying with insurance. Make sure your absolute rock bottom that you absolutely won't go under is your ships insurance amount.

It will cover your ship against the following every time -

- bugs.
- exploits.
- combat deaths.
- plain stupidity.
- nerdrage.

Do NOT think that you'll be careful. The moment you go out of that dock below insurance Murphy will most likely come knocking and the only alternative will be to come on here expecting sympathy.

You have been warned.

But... it's more fun to blame the game!

Plus, it's never our fault! It's always "bad game design" at work here!

And to be truly safe, you need to have at least double the insurance value. If you have the insurance value alone then on dying you will be flying uninsured...

C'mon, flying without insurance is great fun!

Especially if you also gave up your shield generator for extra cargo space and spent your last 20 or 30 K credits just to fill your hold with "that last 2 tons of gold"...

: )

Flying with no insurance excess = temporary Iron Man mode fun.

I've done it in the past playing Open, in order to make some quick credits. Heart thumping moments ensue. I never blamed the game when it went horribly wrong, as it will always eventually do. :)

I learned my lesson the hard way but it was only a couple of days in, still flying the Sidewinder. Wouldn't want to risk it with my Adder...

2x the amount is what I usually aim for holding back so I have enough to put something in the cargo holds. Of course Murphy has been busy elsewhere ever since and I haven't needed the insurance money. Not that I am remotely tempted to risk his sense of humour!

Agree with holding X2 your insurance, it's just common sense and protects against the very rare lightning striking twice/stuff happens worst case scenario.

Lol, in mind of Murphy's Law triple that.

As someone that has, ahem, overextended in the past and learnt the hard lesson:

The BEST insurance policy is to also have multiple ships. Unintended things will happen, occasionally more than once in a row. At some point, no matter how prudent you are with insurance multiple, some players will hit rock then the hard place. Having a previous ship to fall back may still hurt, but not as devastating as losing everything. (We are, after all, only two weeks after launch. Imagine losing everything in 2 months, or 2 years!)

Yes, I know. "It won't happen to me"...

At least keep an extra fighting ship and trading ship.

Apart from mitigating risk, it's expensive to take an Asp or Python into a conflict zone, so take time off from trading occasionally, pop back into your fully tricked Cobra or Viper and have fun!

Further tip: Make friends. If you do get a run of bad luck your friends will happily chip in to get you back on your feet.

Don't be in such a big flipping hurry to upgrade to a more expensive ship, especially once you're into ships that cost multiple millions.

They get greedy and have to get that new shiny right now! Then, when it goes south, come to the forums and have drama.

A lot of this angst would have been avoided if they had kept a real cushion, like having several million on hand after buying and upgrading the new ship.

You should have maybe 2x the cost of the ship before you actually buy it.

So for a Cobra have about 800k, an Asp 12 million, etc. Otherwise your going to end up with a stock ship that performs worse than your previous one and you will be broke.
