[PSA] nVidia 6XX and 7XX Users. Don't Update Drivers.

Hello CMDRs.
This thread will probably sink to the abyss quite quickly, as I doubt many CMDRs still use outdated hardware like I do. :D

In any case, if you're experiencing severe distorted terrain issues on your nVidia 6XX or 7XX series cards, using newish or latest drivers, it's the driver's themselves causing the issue.

Example of effect;

Simple Fix;
Roll back to v388.71, as I believe that's the latest version that doesn't destroy planets.

Do not submit a bug report, or contact support, as they will tell you to update your driver's, which is, for once, a bad idea, and won't help at all.
(No offence guys!)

Check your driver's regularly too, nVidia and/or Windows seem to like quietly updating them for you.

Alternatively, you can update your hardware. Lol

Fly safe!

Does this include Maxwell 7xx too or only Kepler?

I'm usinga lowly 750 where planets look okay on medium settings so far with 417.22.

While we're talking about Nvidia and crap drivers: If you have a GeForce GTX 980 and experience driver crashes (gray screen of death), go to the Nvidia system monitor and enable debug mode under the help menu. That has in my experience prevented those crashes. Took me long enough to find that out. Did find out quickly, though, that tech help forums are 99% trash.

On a related note, when I upgraded my GTX 1060 to the 400+ drivers (the ones that support the RTX cards), I got a weird kind of flickering on my monitors.

I have three monitors, and they are all old VGA ones with Displayport adapters on them, so that may be a partial cause. But the Nvidia drivers numbered in the 300s don't cause that problem, so I went back to them.

Can someone with this terrain issue visit Laksak engineer base and take a screenshot?

Just wondering because there's also an issue with Nvidia's latest Linux drivers as mentioned in the Linux/Wine thread and I'm wondering whether this is the same issue or something else. (obviously running the game through wine is unsupported but it would be nice to know).

680 GTX here :D

Thanks for the heads up, I was planning updating my heavily outdated drivers this weekend. Looks I don't have to. Now all I have to do is resolve that strange issue with screen going black (outside the window of my ship), cockpit panel going bright white with really intensive glare, after few seconds things go back to normal. I suspect new sound card (SB Z) causing problems, tho can't say what nature - too close to GFX card and heat issues or PSU too weak for overall rig.

Anyway, I planned moving SB Z few slots away and update GFX drivers as well this weekend. You saved me some confusion with your warning.
Sincere thanks.

Many thanks, I updated the driver when I got back into this game for 3.3.
Wondered why I kept sinking into mountains..... must remember to roll back before I log on next.

Cheers.

severe distorted terrain issues
By that, do you mean vertical walls appearing to smooth themselves into the ground as you approach them, like you're pushing a massive invisible steamroller a couple of hundred meters ahead of your SRV? Had a bizzare instance like that on an early landing in 3.3, but I didn't take video or even a note of the system & body. Or any mind-altering substances other than caffeine... 660GTX user here. Oldest part of the PC in my case :) Might try the rollback next time I see it happen. I was looking for a geological site for the first time, so I wasn't surprised it was a heavily-canyoned area. Didn't know what to expect.

Yes! Exactly that.

It'll be your driver's. Lol

I have video somewhere, I'll add it to my OP if I can find it...

I recently updated the drivers for my gtx 770 and since suffered all sorts of problems, even just in windows, lots of problems, esp when waking up a sleeping monitor.

I fairly quickly reverted.

I have just been back to GeForce's drivers site and my black-screen problem seems to have been addressed.

"This is GeForce Hotfix driver version 417.58 that addresses the following:

  • Black screen when resuming from monitor sleep on some DisplayPort monitors
  • Windows 7: FPS drop when G-sync is used with V-sync in games
  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Fixes occasional application crash in DirectX 12 mode
  • Fixes black screen on BenQ XL2730 monitor using 144Hz refresh rate
  • Fixes lockup when resuming from sleep on MSI GT83 notebook"
