PSA: Save often!

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

If you've amassed a bunch of credits since your last save, exit and save!

I love the beta, but it's unstable and who knows what might happen next time you're blown to smitherines. I just lost 10K credits from about 20 kills at the Federation Distress Signal site after being blow up, selecting "old loadout" and then getting stuck on the infinite loading screen of death forcing me to hard quit. That reset about an hours worth of progress. I got the ship back that was blown up- I know this because the hull was at 36% - but lost my hard earned credits. Hrmpf!!

yeah about the same thing happened to me too. I know the game autosaves when you jump, or engage 'supercruise', does it do this at any other times? Be nice to know so you don't have to log out to the menu all the time :)

Yeah, that is currently my biggest gripe, that I have to regularly interrupt the game for a quick Save&Quit in order not to lose my progress in case the client crashes or freezes up or the connection to the server drops, or, how I once lost 10,000cr, the supercruise startup sequence never ends, and you have to kill the process.

I wonder as this means the credits are stored on the client and are not synchronized with the server. Wut?! To me that's a very irritating concept.

Any chance a helpful chappie could confirm exactly when the game auto saves please?

  • After you enter and exit supercruise (this includes interdiction).
  • After a hyperspace jump.
  • After buying a ship.
  • Manual Save&Quit.

It seems the save is done near the end of each of those actions, for when one refuses to complete - for example a supercruise enter/exit transition doesn't stop - and you have to kill the process, the progress since the previous save is lost.

Not sure whether there is an actual persistent save file locally, but when logging into your account on a different computer with a fresh installation, everything is automatically there, so in the end it has to be saved on the server.

What I hope FD do for the next update is to at least implement period auto-saves, like once every minute, so that it is no longer necessary to interrupt everything in order to have everything save when you are out fighting.

This is very wise advice. Its a pity we have to save at all but is it what it is atm. I'd certainly recomend saving after doing a trading jump or after making a few kills.

I found that if you save and click back on multiplayer you can very quickly get back into the game where you left off. ;)

So just to clarify, you can be helping out in a Low Intensity Combat Zone, rack up a few kills, hit save&quit, and come back into the game already at the combat zone knowing your bank is safe up to that point?

Yes, everything is saved when you do that.

Unfortunately I didn't follow my own advice after I posted this - got on a roll and amassed close to 15K credits in 2 separate runs - game crashed during both of them. So I rage quit and shook my fist at the computer. I don't the PC - or the game- heard me, though.
