PSA: Threat 0 Signals Are Not What They Seem...

I just had this happen to me last night!
Dropped in to a USS "Encoded emissions - Threat 0". Popped open the hatch and dispatched a collector limpet when all of a sudden my comms say "I can't believe that worked? Get'em boys!" and 4 pirates attack me all at once! By the time I reacted my shields we low and I low waked out but this is a cool new thing.
Well done FDev!

AFAICR - this isn't new. When USS first made an appearance I visited one much like you described, and got ambushed by a ship. It made me smile. Having said that I haven't been exploring USS's for a long time so don't know how frequent or if they took that out for a while etc.

I love when they do that.. more materials to collect.

I might collect materials in an Asp Scout, but it has engineered Packhounds, and I do not fear to let loose the dogs of war.

I'm sorry... but... pirate NPCs posing as space wreckage and floating "dead" in space with silent running enabled?

That.

Sounds.

AWESOME.

Can WE play this game? As in, if I drop into a threat zero USS in a busy system in a very cold DBS and wait, will that same USS be visible to anyone in the system with me if they are in SC while I'm in normal space? Not that I'm a pirate, but it I was a pirate, I think this "set a trap" gameplay would be quite fun.

It would be a great gameplay option, particularly for group play.

Not yet. But I agree it would be great if we could.

Just as it would be great if you could pick up assassination missions that target a human player, and suchlike. :)

It would be awesome yeah.

But I feel like it would just... never happen, ther galaxy is so vast, and players so very spread apart.

In theory it's amazing, in practice I just doubt it would do anything.

I had something like this happen to me recently. Dropped into a 0 threat USS in my Chieftain only to get bounced by an eagle and conda that followed me in. Killed the eagle pretty easy and had the conda 70% done when security dropped in and helped finish it off. It was the most fun I had all day.

It Had To Happen Sometime...

On one of my last gathering runs, Gladys, my Cobra 3, dropped into a degraded signal source.

Gladys has 4A, max engineered shields, a max military hull, deep plated, and max engineered boosters. She boosts at well over 500 m/s. Never got the chance.

The Expert FDL that was the NPC pirate lead finished me in twenty seconds. Swatted/sniped my drives and power plant. He had at least two others, with missiles, assisting him (not that he needed it).

Fortunately, Gladys' rebuy was under a million. I was using her, for that reason. I had not expected .303 to be so deadly.

It was an appropriate end to the gathering phase. I had just completed maxing out my inventory of engineered ships.

No need to go gathering stuff, anymore. I will still need to go mining, probably forever. :(

I now have maxed G5 ships for almost every occasion:

Sidewinder.
Cobra 3.
T6.
DBS.
Cobra 4.
Asp Explorer.
Python.

That's it. Nothing else but Bookmark Winders.

No need for the big boats. Alison The Asp Explorer jumps 45 light years, fully equipped. Penelope The Python can handle the CG's, and the mining. Mootilda The T6 jumps 42 light years, and makes a great courier. She was built out of spare parts. Gladys, and Sidney make for great local runners. The DBS was built out of spares, and will be used for local work, once they fix the KWS. It also jumps more than thirty light years. Sooo many G5 4A FSD's to choose from.

I used up my inventory of pre 3.0 G4+ parts to build ships. No need to reproduce them under 3.0, as they worked very well indeed. The only exceptions were, of course, the FSD's. It was amazing just how much I had stored up. I may have kept The Dweller going for a few days on the pulse laser collection I had, alone.

The alt account isn't bothering with anything but G5 FSD's. It will simply keep going, as-is.

So, I'm set. You can bait the signal sources all you want now, Space Loaches. You've given me enough personal narrative now, thank you very much.

Enjoy the ambushes, for you will find they are cast-iron Hillary's.

Dropped into a Degraded Emissions Source. Two pirates (Expert), playing as space junk, jumped me. They had silent running on, and looked like wreckage, at first. The art department did a good job.

Closed the cargo scoop and ran. They had missiles, and other fun things to play with. Managed to get out. Fortunately, I had just maxed my drives.

So, part of our new "personal narrative", besides collecting materials like crazy, is that the materials themselves are crazy, and want to kill you...

There's only so much risk I'm going to take, for engineering my ships. If they really, really want us to suffer for the new materials, they have succeeded.

I *did* re-mount my KWS, since this mornings update, but if I had stopped to use it, I would be materials myself.

The Space Loaches Giveth, And The Space Loaches Take Away. REDACTED be the name of the Space Loaches.

I had this happen a few days after Horizon came out. The day I learned the rebuy rule.
