PSA: tips from the popular guide writer

Public Service Announcement for 3.3: With the big 'Beyond' patch, a big change will be the removal of Discovery Scanners and how we'll need to bind new keys for the FSS that replaces it. I have some tips on what controls to focus on as you build the new keybinds. My advice is to focus on these keys so you're comfortable with the FSS:

-Zoom in, zoom out, tuning +/- will be most used (I use ship control equivalents, AWSD)
-Steeped zoom is less used but still essential , works well with an 'analog' control (I use my mousewheel).

And to help out more visual folks, the first few pages of the popular guide to exploration has this advice in more detail, with pictures, and how I found my .binds file to setup useful double-binds in the beta.
The popular guide to exploration
Page 13 has a pictured guide how to use the FSS as well.
I also recommend you practice that FSS in a simpler or uninhabited system, until one gets used to it.

(And if you want to try out the new core mining tools I updated my mining guide, it's in my signature.)

Just to add to that....

I'd suggest that people play with both the DSS and the FSS (as well as, perhaps, considering the maps and the camera-suite too) before deciding on any new key-binds.

There's a whole heap of UI's within the game which all, basically, use similar controls (move around screen, zoom in/out, twiddle things, confirm/reject things) and they don't ever overlap so you can, theoretically, re-use the same set of controls for a bunch of different UIs.

Part of the reason I find the FSS so irritating is that, with a bit more planning, FDev could have created a definitive "UI control set" which'd apply to the FSS/DSS, maps, HUDs, camera-suite, station UI and multicrew and then allowed people to create ONE set of binds for controlling ALL this stuff or create different binds for each thing.

That would be clever :) I do use the same controls for different aspects of the UI.. It's even more essential as i play in VR so i have my hands on the HOTAS, and cannot see my keyboard.
