Pseudo-Psychological Study of Engineering or the Ten Steps to RNG Self-Actualization

One-
Anticipation- I really would like to get my x-ship to boost to 1k if I collect enough of the materials to roll a hundred, thousand whatever rolls, I’ll be the envy of the forums!

Two-
Formulation- I need to scour the best systems to get all the mats to spawn and kill innocent NPC’s to scavenge their remains.

Three-
Arrival- After two weeks of intense play I have the mats. I‘m on my way to engineer Impaling to roll for that 140%+ result.

Four-
Realization- The rolls begin, do I use a clean module or improve on a previous one? Try clean! The results seesaw back and forth, weight goes up/down, multiplier goes up/down, power consumption, integrity, the slides tease and then the after-effects change things yet again.

Five-
Frustration- I get a 135, 136, 137, not good enough! I try and the RNG seems to have taken a dislike to me, I start to get 120’s. Why didn’t I take that 137! Never mind, the goal is the mystical unicorn 140+, have to keep at it.

Six-
Fear- I’m running out of mats and I haven’t anything to show for it, weeks of work gone in minutes. I have to have something to show for it!

Seven-
Resignation- That’s it, the next decent roll I have to keep so I have some concrete result, 10 rolls left. RNG doesn’t smile upon me but sneers and excretes a 137 multiplier but the weight is not optimal so, downcast and downtrodden, I take the results and install.

Eight-
Remorse- This wasn’t worth the effort! X-ship only increased 10 points of max thruster speed and handling still feels like I’m turning in molasses.

Nine-
Denial- It was just bad luck, that 140+ was right there, if only I would have collected a few more mats to roll! RNG can’t be that way all the time.

Ten-
Enlightenment- I must remember this experience, the journey is the prize, I must take play naturally, enjoy what the games gives. In return, I will devote all my free time to achieve Nirvana, quit my job, ignore my family and leave all the trappings of my previous life to be the Journey, OMMMM!

RNG smiles from its lofty perch and looks down upon yet another acolyte added to the growing total, “Mere mortals, so facile to manipulate”. RNG then yawns and says “Next!”

denial: i don't need no stinking engineer
anger: hey but there's no way i can compete with these guys!
bargaining: ok, let's do this. maybe. maybe ...
depression: , this is truly nuts and boring
acceptance: i don't need no stinking engineer, i'll go play something else

The RNG mechanic ties into our brain's Dopaminergic system, so it's all about the anticipation of a good roll, not the roll itself :)

We are all addicted gamblers.

Most games use these tactics to make an endless profit stream from the players. FDev uses it to torture us for no gain whatsoever.

RNGineer: "Lets throw this in and see what happens."
RNGineer: "Hmm, poor result, lets try again with the same thing in and see what happens."

That's my current impression of Engineers in this game, my new commander is ignoring them, fortunately I only do PvE and know how to pick my targets.

Just take the first decent roll you get, max it out at three or four rolls. Self inflicted grind is as daft as the justifications people give for it.

Having two modules doesn't affect the rolls that are generated, but it does allow you to "bank" a good one. Keep looking for that unicorn!

Sure, that's the fallacy.
I haven't seen anything that actually confirms this is genuinely random at all, that said.
There may be ways to trick the system(for good or bad results) much like many old casino machines.
It's been confirmed once already.

I do it because it allows you to look in the outfitting section so you don't have to guess about the total effects of the roll compared to a current one.
There is currently, inexplicably, no way to see that while doing the engineering on a single module.
The banking is gravy.
I had many modules engineered to an acceptable level by the time I achieved rank/funds for my Cutter and Corvette.

My own experience:

Calls at Palin's with enough stuff for three rolls
Roll one - it's crap.
Roll two - it's reasonably good, I accept it.
Roll three - it's better than roll two, so I replace roll two with this one.
Leaves Palin's in a faster ship.

I'm obviously doing it wrong.

1--Arousal
2--Arousal, but more
3--Emotional deflation. If it had a sound it would either be "Sssssssssssss..." or just plain old whimpering

The lack of evidence doesn't prove or disprove anything. Unfortunately, you just know that you don't know.

As to genuine random, I have my doubts but no proof.

I take it you are referring to the CHEAT as to the trick, only FD knows for sure what that was all about. Whether any more are out there, need proof.

You can always write down your module characteristics from your best ones and refer to them as the results roll through. It's not that I don't have good ones already, I am just playing the system for the excitement.[big grin]

After all, my post was an attempt at humor, not at all a real RNG discussion. That's for the math people to decipher if they amass a large enough sample.

Sure, I'm just humoring the attempt.
We're on the same page it seems.

I'm talking about if there's an FSD increase of 2% multiplier but a decrease of 4% optimal mass, and a module mass increase on top of that, knowing those facts doesn't make it any clearer immediately if that module will raise your FSD range.
All that information from the outfitting page should be on the engineering page, so we can see the difference just like when we browse or buy a new module.
I know by now what numbers are "better" but the concrete results are still a little opaque.
