Capital ships should be awe inspiring beasts and objects of fear and pride. However they are quite frankly useless and a liability (not to mention the Imperial cap ship appears less capable).

Improvements:

I know cap ships have torpedo tubes- every so often get them to launch a pair of reverb torpedoes to worry players.

Give cap ships remote release flechette launchers for close in battles (like flak on WW2 battleships). Treat us like Thargons :D

Provide them with an SLF equivalent of spec ops that target players after destroying part of the cooling system.

Up the power of a ships weapons a lot. Have cap ships focus fire on ships but also give the players a warning like 'capital ship locking on' so you have to retreat or evade.

Give cap ships voiced lines or text. They are important, I want them to taunt me with spicy talk.

From a recent CG which had three megaships in the same instance, drop in MOAR capital ships rather than the usual dancing pair.

Make cap ships orbit each other, move about etc. Make entrances more cinematic and dynamic with cap ships crossing each other.
 
I fully endorse this message. It bothers me that capital ships are so anemic and underpowered that i can literally sit in one spot and happily blast away at vital pieces of machinery with little worry. Instead of experiencing dread, I only sigh when a capital ship warps in because I have to stop slaughtering NPC's for a few minutes to deal with this inconvenience. I would love to feel fear again.
 
Since I’ve been playing Fleet Battles in Star Wars Squadrons, I’ve thought there’s a lot there that Elite could do with pinching 😁

Although ED’s cap ships look awesome in VR as they Witchspace in, it’s not long before you can make them jump back out again.

In addition to the OP’s suggestions, I’d like to be able to fly the big ship’s fighter defenders as part of Naval career missions or a sort of in-game CQC.
 
The aim of these changes I suggest are really to stop people camping in one place and force them to be evasive and move. Reverb torpedoes force you to evade, you can't sit close or you'll get chewed up via flak, after each component destroyed a squad of Elite SLFs will be launched after you, cruisers focus fire forcing you to shift positions. Its adding dynamism to what should be a really epic battle with a really nice game asset.

SLFs, torps, Pack-Hound batteries, Spec Ops as perimeter defence.
When a Cap ship drops in it should be brown pants time, not 'Ooh goody! 500k!'
 
This would also give a proper differentiation between high and med CZs. On the other hand it should remain a skill bonus where attacking the cap ship gets the business done quicker, but the CZ can still technically be completed without engaging.
 
I love this. Plus it's enough changes to call it the "Capital Ships" balance update. The game would gather a lot of respect if, after Odyssey, it releases a bunch of updates focused at existing stuff that is either crawling with bugs or outdated (like it was doing on Beyond, before all work ceased to focus on Odyssey).
